This is Afrobeats artiste Seyi Sodimu during the #Grammy weekend in Los Angeles in the year 2004, talking about how his evergreen song Love Me Jeje was rejected by major labels in America because he sounded “African”… Who knew that 20yrs later, a song by another Nigerian artiste Tems, titled Love Me Jeje (inspired by Seyi’s song) would come back to that same Los Angeles and WIN a Grammy! 😊 Congrats to both TEMS and Seyi Sodimu 🙌🏾🙌🏾 Nigeria is proud of you 🇳🇬🇳🇬 Video: INTRO LIVE with Abass Tijani GRAMMY Special Edition 2004. Back in 2006, when I was producing the Kanu Heart Foundation Gala Night in London, putting together who’s gonna perform on the night, a friend of ours Medina told us she has a baby sister who can rap, so we put her on the show to open for D’banj who was the main act. The baby sister’s name is “Little Simz”… Fast forward 20 years and that 12 year old is a global superstar! Her live shows is a must see! Happy Birthday Little Simz 🎉

This is a little clip from my documentary in 1999 on K1 the Ultimate titled “Kwam 1: The Future”. Right after this documentary, shot entirely in London, he asked me to be his Manager… and the rest, as they say, is HISTORY! That beat the band boys were working on is what they call “skoskola”. A running beat programmed in the keyboard to replicate the little metronome-like talking drum called “omele” that can go on for hours! Not many people know that I am a Fuji “head”. I was in studio with K1 for 5 full albums in 4yrs, I can translate talking drums! In #AfrobeatsTheBackstory Season 2, you will see how we break down the rudiments of the talking drums from Fuji and Apala to what Asake is doing today. Make I finish this thing first, you will be surprised. I am not telling the story of Afrobeats, I am telling the BACKSTORY! 😎 Netflix

PLENTY NONSENSE videoshoot BTS 24 years ago… My first ever music video in Nigeria. Plenty Nonsense by Trybesmen. There’s a line in the song, “I was a brilliant boy, I top class in Primary…”, so I called my old primary school, Sunnyfields in Surulere Lagos, that I wanted to shoot a music video in my old classroom, and have Eldee do that rap sitting in my exact old seat! The headteacher at the time, who is the daughter of my headteacher said yes sure. I promised the kids in the class that I would put all their faces on television and they would be famous. Lol. Only a few faces made the music video, but I just found this old video and I’m fulfilling my promise now, albeit over 20 years later. I wonder where these “kids” are now? Tag yourself if you recognise yourself or anyone you know. It would actually be great to see some of these children now. eLDee Kunle Bello aka Daddy M&M

Afrobeats PhD… Today, I gave a 2 hour lecture on Afrobeats at the School of Law, University of Westminster in London. This is part of my preparation for a doctorate program next year on the study of Afrobeats. I produced the first documentary on Afrobeats on Netflix, and now I am taking it a notch higher in Academia. The history of Afrobeats, the components of the sound, the pioneers, the ownership, licensing and globalisation of the most dynamic music genre out of Africa deserves deep research, curation, methodology, delivery and truth. Wish me luck guys 🙏🏾 Afrobeats to the WORLD!

“KINI FUJI E?” Teaser. K1 the Engineer! 😊 Houston, Texas. Our first show of the Wasiu Ayinde American Tour 2002. The Promoters set up the sound for the show but no sound engineer. Our manager Percy Ademokun was not happy with the situation, but Wasiu said he can do the soundcheck and balance the sound all by himself. It took over an hour of him going back and forth from stage to console, balancing his voice, and each instrument. At some point, it looked like it couldn’t be done and Percy was losing patience. But in the end, K1 got it right, and couldn’t resist throwing some lyrical jabs at Percy for doubting him earlier 😊 The documentary “Kini Fuji E?” is my story of my time as manager of the King of Fuji music, K1 the Ultimate, and how we travelled the world, spreading the gospel of Fuji music. Currently in production, and will be exclusively on the R70 Television YouTube channel and will premiere when we hit 100,000 subscribers!!! Merry Christmas Everyone! 🎄 So in 1999, I wrote and directed a film that was very good, titled Spin, shot in London and starring Caroline Chikezie, Chebe Azih and myself, with a fantastic soundtrack by Ola Onabule. We took it to a few film festivals before release on DVD, and it even got some nominations and great reviews. The first film by a Nigerian to premiere at a cinema in London’s Westend. If I put this film on my YouTube channel, would you watch it? 😊 Subscribe to the R70 Television YouTube channel now. Lots of exciting content on there. We’re building something trust me. Who is a Storyteller? Asake sang, “timing is everything, keep it moving”. When Netflix didn’t renew my Afrobeats documentary, I thought it was the worst timing ever. But I kept it moving. I said let me try this YouTube thing. I dug deep into my archives and realised, the real deep story of Afrobeats is a series of coincidences, timing and luck. And I was right in the centre of it, and recorded it all. This is even deeper than what I gave Netflix. This clip is from Season 1 Episode 1 of the “Afrobeats Podumentary” series starting in November on R70 Television on YouTube

THE KING AND I… This rough VHS clip is from 1996 when I was struggling in the crowd to record King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (Kwam 1) at the Nigerian Corner at the Notting Hill Carnival in London. Never in my wildest dreams did I think just 3 years later I would become his manager, and my journey in music would begin. For those of you that have been asking me for that K1 documentary, now you will have it! This is my story with the King of Fuji music during the 5 years I spent with him. At home with family, in the studios for 5 albums, backstage and on-stage all over the world, on the planes, in the cars, from Lagos to London, across Europe to Canada and our world tours, including the famous American tour of 2002, I recorded all the way. From our good times, recording the album New Lagos for Bola Tinubu, the near death on a flight from Toronto, and also when I was stabbed in the head that I still carry the scars till today… EVERYTHING, and some surprises. If Netflix doesn’t value proper African music documentaries and original stories, we will take our content to other platforms. Watch this space for more details next month July when I make a big announcement. I am the original “content creator” 😎

The "50 best Afrobeats songs of all time" by billboard does not have "Shako Mo" by Remedies, even though the criteria says "the most FOUNDATIONAL, influential and popular", so how in the world does the all time 50 Afrobeats tracks exclude the song that started the whole genre?! This is what happens when foreign media tell OUR stories for us and back to us. And before you point out that their "staff" who compiled the list are Nigerians, if those staff had compiled the list without the Billboard name, it wouldn't be reposted and applauded as much as it has been since they put it out. Yes, Billboard has contributed to the upward movement and globalisation of Afrobeats over the years with the US Afrobeats Songs Chart, The Billboards Awards showcasing Afrobeats performances at their awards and categories etc, but they completely dropped the ball on this list by not including "Shako Mo", and also "Wetin Dey" by Ruff Rugged & Raw (Paul IK Dairo). These 2 songs created the "fusion" of West African rhythms with Hip-Hop and the use of the "5 Beat Pattern" (the backbone of Afrobeats) respectively. "Shako Mo" by Remedies, with the iconic rap by Eedris Abdulkareem is the reason we are all here celebrating and enjoying what we call Afrobeats today. - Video clip is from the documentary Afrobeats 2: The Origins. Summer of 2001… The whole band just landed in London from a show in Dublin, and we just got a message that the then Lagos State Governor wanted Kwam 1 to compose a song for the new KAI (initially called “Kick Away Indiscipline”) campaign. We didn’t even go home, we went straight to a studio in East London to start recording. The exact moment the chorus came to him, I caught it on camera. In fact, I had so much access that I had the special privilege to be in the recording booth with him all the time, which our manager Percy Ademokun initially objected to, but over time got used to me filming EVERYTHING. To the man who gave me my first job in music, and also allowed me to film exclusive content of him for close to 5 years, I say thank you for the opportunity and HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the King of Fuji music, K1 the Ultimate 🎉🎉🎉 “Ayinde lo l’orin” 🙌🏾
