Yards away from the grand opening ceremony of Raising Cane’s in Owings Mills, animal rights activists held what they described as a “somber vigil” in protest of the new fried chicken chain outpost. On Wednesday morning, representatives of the nonprofit organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) gathered outside the new Owings Mills Raising Cane’s, at 10231 Reisterstown Road. The group held signs denouncing the brand and featuring photographs of dejected chickens in cages, and passed out “vegan starter kits” with literature and advice on observing a plant-based diet. “Raising Cane’s makes a big to-do about these opening day celebrations,” PETA volunteer organizer David Salisbury said. “I think if most people knew what happened in these houses of horror, they would ditch the chicken fast-food bag and join us out here.” Read more: 🎥: Caleb Townsend, The Baltimore Sun
