Public Health Issue Alert 🚨 Travelling on Vande Bharat today (Allahabad → Delhi) and yesterday was travelling on Rajdhani (Delhi → Allahabad), I was served rotis/kachoris heated directly inside sealed plastic packaging. While at Rajdhani, I was hungry and so ate the hot Kachori almost instantly and then realised - wait, how can it be hot? Wasn’t it in a sealed packet? How could they heat the packet directly? Then this repeated today and I couldn’t stop myself from inquiring - The “Halka Phulka” roti packet clearly states: • “Store in a cool & dry place” • No mention of microwave/heating in-pack • No “microwave safe” indication Yet the packets are handed over visibly hot. Lakhs of passengers can verify this - the rotis are served warm with the plastic pack heated. The person in the train confirmed that rotis were being heated directly in the packet. Food-grade plastic is not automatically heat-safe unless certified for microwave/steam use. Heating multilayer packaging without clear instructions can potentially increase chemical migration into food - especially when done repeatedly at scale. This may be operational convenience. But food safety should never rely on shortcuts. Requesting IRCTC Ministry of Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw to clarify: - Are these institutional packs certified for in-pack heating? - If so, can that certification be publicly shared? - Is this happening on all trains? 🚆 - Who has authorised this? Passenger safety deserves application of mind - not just efficiency. Just to make the passengers that IRCTC is serving hot food, how can such a careless thing be done - playing with the health of lakhs of people who are eating this food? The last thing we want is blame game buck to be passed between IRCTC FSSAI - Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution will say that it is Railways’ mistake. Railway minister will say it is the third party vendor who has been given the tender - it’s their mistake. Third party vendor will find someone at the lowest in the ladder like the gentleman in this video who admitted that they were heated in microwave, to fix the blame on - while fixing NO Accountability of the damage already done and NO Responsibility for what’s to come. Action / Clarification on this ought to be issued from the Railway Ministry. Corrective Measures need to be announced immediately. #railways #VandeBharat #HotFoodScam

Mamata Banerjee (Didi) in Supreme Court - why this was historic and what was oh, so regular! 1. There was a palpable energy in the SC that could be felt by everyone present in Court Room No. 1 - everyone was waiting to hear - will she be allowed to speak? She did! And what an epitome of intelligence, humility and grace. She was interrupted a few times but the message was clear - she will not leave without making her voice heard! She spoke - and asked some pertinent questions : A) The #SIR process which should take at least 2 years properly, why is it being done in 3 months ? B) Why is SIR exercise happening in election going states? C) Why has the Election Commission not responded to the various letters written by her and the State? D) She pointed out crores of people stand the risk of disenfranchisement because they may not have the time to get corrections done in such a short time due to the festivals and harvest season. 2) I heard whispers by some - “Ah, the DRAMA - Political Drama!” But why does no one notice the alleged DRAMA of the State Counsels, who need instructions, argue on technicalities and were willing to say anything that doesn’t require them to argue on merits today. When the State Counsels tried to stop her, CJI remarked - let her speak, she has travelled a long distance. (Mild laughter in court!) 3) What was most heartening is the abated breaths with which people heard on both sides - those who had managed to squeeze themselves and still keep standing in a full packed court! Most heartening personally was the eye glances - with women in the room - smiling softly - who knew what’s happening beyond what’s being said - the subtext! And the power of a woman taking on the powers to be. 4) The Court listed the matter for Monday - said it will also hear the petition filed by Election Commission and asked the State of West Bengal represented by Senior Advocate Shyam Diwan ji, to give a list of government officers who can help with correcting discrepancies that may arise from Bengali spellings /names. So what’s historic is - a tigress leading from the front, not yielding an inch to argue, for her people. What’s regular is - no debate on META questions, technical nitty gritties of the case, and ofcourse - next date. My only regret - not be able to tell her, while she got in the car and waived goodbye - “Didi, you are a warrior princess!” This moment will be etched in my memory till I am alive. Love my profession on days like these when you see history in making - firsthand! But all legal battles like this one - will be a long one! Someday perhaps, in our lifetimes, we would be able to argue and the Court will hold that matters of these type that impact our constitution’s foundation have to be heard in FIXED time and resolved in FIXED time. No drama - just swift and substantial ACCESS TO JUSTICE FOR ALL. P.S. Senior Advocate Gopal Shankarnarayan raised two important points - that different states are having to raise different points regarding SIR - the subtext I think was that the META questions regarding SIR should be heard and settled for once and all so that SIR related litigations do not become a never ending relay. To this it was responded by the Bench - that this is how it’s going to be, it’s only natural (not verbatim). Also Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal intervened, and on a lighter note was told by the CJI - Mr. Sibal you are not well, you should rest today! (Mild laughter in court) Deep breath and onto the next day in the Supreme Court! Am not a journalist, but then who can resist documenting history. And yes lawyers - we all pretend that this is business as usual but then there are days where everyone knows that it is not. When power and law interact in a lively way, for all to see. When the sometimes haughtiness of the lawyers gives way to their humanness - and what’s not said in words has to be read in their eyes and energy. #MamataBanerjee #SupremeCourt

One Man, One Mic and One Big Mess! That’s what Modi ji wants our Parliament to be. The Parliament of India is not a notice board of the BJP that they can regulate as they like - it has to be a level playing fields where voices are heard. BJP doesn’t want ‘discussion’ - all they have is ‘aggression’. But we will fight - on the roads, in the Courts, in the Parliament to ensure that every common person is heard! Students of Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Patiala are on a protest. About 400 of them are sitting at campus on 3rd day facing extreme hot weather, against the various systemic complaints against the Vice -Chancellor Mr. Jai Shankar Singh. The Vice Chancellor entered the female students’ hostel unannounced. He has earlier asked female students to take easy subjects! He is known to ask female teachers to come in ‘Hindustani Poshak’ and has repeatedly commented on the dresses of the students. Allegedly he showed complete lack of apathy when a few months earlier, there was an accident which resulted in the loss of lives of a few students. He is said to have commented ‘if you party late at night, what else do you expect.’ He has also commented on the financial status of students asking them why have they enrolled in an expensive college if their parents can’t pay the fee. This was said to a student who is a batch topper and is on scholarship, when there was a slight delay in making the payment of the college fees. What’s shocking is that there is so much administrative pressure on the students who are protesting that they are not being permitted to meet anyone. There are implied threats to students who speak to anyone , in terms of their marks deductions in upcoming exams. Students have appealed to the Visitor of the University- Justice Surya Kant, Hon’ble Judge of the Supreme Court ; and Chancellor Justice Sheel Nagu, Hon’ble Chief Justice of Punjab & Haryana High Court, to take cognisance of the matter and immediately expel the Vice Chancellor. The questions before us are - - Is closing down the institute a good way to deal with the situation? - Why protect the Vice - Chancellor, when there is clear cut violation of law. - It’s not a one off incident that students are complaining off. Why hand over the top institutes in such hands ? When he was a dean of law at Allahabad University, he was given a notice for entering a female teachers home at odd hours for expediting the last semester exam. - What about the Systemic Issue -Casual Sexism At Law School ? - What about the implementation of POSH? What happens when the complaint is against the top boss ? - What we see is the classic Anatomy of a people’s’ movement - divide the students ; show them fears about their careers ; call the POLICE and then close the university down. - Why does the boss always go scot-free ? - What’s the point of law if the accused are always protected by those in power ? - When was the training of POSH last done at university? If it is mandatory under POSH, then what happens when institutes/organisations don’t follow it ? - Character assassination - the classic ploy to respond to when female students raise any complaint, how long will this be tolerated? - What are we teaching them as students of constitutional law ? If as students of law, they can’t protest for their own rights, how are they expected to fight for the rights of others tomorrow? Remember, great institutions are not judged by the decorum of dress but the strength of character. Questions galore but here in support of these students and will always stand for the right fight! #RGNUL #protest #Patiala #JaiShankar
