I have just completed a trip to the Rafah crossing with European Parliament colleagues from Renew Europe - the first Parliamentary delegation to secure access to the area. The purpose of the visit was to see first hand the international humanitarian effort that is underway and the difficulties that are being faced with getting the aid into Gaza. On the way there we passed hundreds of trucks, for as far as the eye could see, carrying basic humanitarian supplies, all being held up and waiting to cross into Gaza. Everything that goes across has to be cleared by the Israeli government who have listed thousands of items, such as solar panels, water tubes and batteries, as being 'dual use' i.e capable of military use. Both EU Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid 🇪🇺 & Irish Aid are very much present and waiting to cross. I saw a number of trucks with family tents donated by the Irish Government at a logistics hub near Rafah. The tent poles are removed as they are on the 'Dual list' and are deemed capable of military operation. I expected the crossing itself to be chaotic however it was weirdly quiet - which is worrying. What should be a bustling humanitarian hub with non-stop traffic and activity, consisted only of the occasional truck getting through - one passed through in the hour we were there. At the border, people we spoke to said that our visit and the fact that IDF know about it means that no bombing would occur until we had left. When the president of the ICRC visited recently - bombing resumed 30 mins after the visit ended. Bombings, gunfire & drone activity is a daily reality for people who are working at the Rafah crossing. People who are helping evacuate the wounded, the sick and dual nationals wishing to leave are in danger every day. Humanitarian access is a basic requirement for any conflict. It is truly astonishing to think that Rafah is the only crossing point. There would be more truck movements at a busy supermarket in Ireland and yet, behind the gates at Rafah, 2.3 million people are suffering for want of food, water, medicine & fuel. I have no doubt that Israel has made the strategic decision to deliberately frustrate the international humanitarian effort. I will be on This Week RTÉ after 1pm to discuss this.

Over the weekend, I paid my respects to fallen soldiers in Cemetery No.18 in #Kharkiv. The sheer number of graves was staggering - a brutal reminder of the human cost of this war. The sacrifice of the Ukrainian people since the Russian invasion of 2022 has been and continues to be enormous. As they face into their toughest winter yet, we need to continue to provide all the support we can.

If EU diplomats can be the target of the IDF in the West Bank, imagine how the Palestinians are treated. Netanyahu says he is engaged in a war of civilisation over barbarism, but the civilised world has concluded that it is the IDF that is engaged in a campaign of barbarism. The time has long come for the EU to suspend its association agreement with Israel.

The rapid dissemination of inflammatory content online during the Dublin riots is a prime example of how fast we need to act to protect against hate speech & disinformation. With the EU #DigitalServicesAct coming into force at the end of February, the 🇮🇪 government must carry out an urgent review of whether the proposed new Irish legislation is now necessary. #EPlenary

There is no reason why #BlackFriday can’t be Green Friday. Because right now, Black Friday is the opposite of responsible consumption. People should be able to enjoy some Christmas shopping and get good deals but this weekend brings: ➡️ Environmental damage ➡️ Consumer regret ➡️ Poor quality products We can do better. The EU 🇪🇺 is already moving, with new rules to make products last longer through the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation. Consumers have power too: shop local, buy second-hand, or support brands that put sustainability first.

This is not a strategy but an aimless display of military power. Statesmanship, political vision and a genuine desire for peace are absent. Children are being killed by AI drones. I would like to commend all those Irish 🇮🇪 artists that have boycotted SXSW festival in the past week over US Army & defence companies' sponsorship. Providing aid to #Gaza with one hand and bombs to #Israel with the other is absurd. Do you really think #Palestinian women & children will be grateful for food aid sent to them by the same people that supply arms targeted at them? I would be embarrassed & ashamed to be associated with such a perverse policy. #EPlenary #CeasefireNow
