Ellen Naomi Cohen died of a heart attack at age 32 on this day in 1974. Rumours about a ham sandwich are absolute rubbish, as are the people who promulgated them. She left behind a 7-year-old daughter, Owen.

29-year-old Marc Bolan was killed instantly when the car driven by his girlfriend, Gloria Jones, left the road and hit a tree in London on this day in 1977. Jones broke her jaw in the accident. The couple was on the way to Bolan's home in Richmond after a night out at a Mayfair restaurant. A local man who witnessed the crash said, 'When I arrived a girl was lying on the bonnet and a man with long dark curly hair was stretched out on the road - there was a hell of a mess.' Here he is getting it on with a special guest.

An unwelcome immigrant arrived on our shores on this day in 1967 at age 14 to steal Aussie musicians' jobs. Still got the goddamn accent, though.

#1 on the Canadian charts 60 years ago today. Also hit the top in Sweden and the top 5 in Australia, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway and the U.K. Anything with Graham Nash deserves a top spot in at least one country.

Randolph Charles Bachman t-t-t-turns 83 today. The band intended to record this track one-off on cassette to send to Gary Bachman as a joke because he had a stutter. When Mercury Records executive Charlie Fach heard the track while reviewing their Not Fragile album sessions, he insisted it had major radio potential and demanded it be included on the record. Randy tried re-recording the song with a "serious" vocal delivery, but it lacked the charm of the original take and sounded flat, so they kept the joke version. It became BTO's only number-one single on the US Billboard Hot 100.

I don't often dismiss songs or artists, but really... one of the worst songs in the history of bad songs hit #1 on the US charts on this day in 1973. It also topped the charts in Australia, Belgium, Canada, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, South Africa, and the UK.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of their Adult Contemporary chart, Billboard published its list of the top 100 Adult Contemporary songs of all time on this day in 2011. I'm not a fan of the soppy genre, but at least Aussies came out on top.
