Medieval punishment in “new” Bangladesh: Blindfolded, hogtied, tortured, beaten with a stick, and publicly humiliated over allegations of being a drug peddler. Videos of a recent incident in #Brahmanbaria’s Nabinagar Upazila have gone viral on social media, showing a 'Salish' (informal village arbitration) administering a medieval-style punishment to a local man named Ovi Miah over allegations that he is a drug peddler. The incident took place in the Narui Bazar area of Kaitoli Union in the presence of the victim’s mother, wife, and, apparently, the entire village. The video shows Ovi Miah being blindfolded, hogtied, verbally abused, physically tortured, and publicly humiliated by village elders and their associates. Throughout the ordeal, the victim can be heard screaming in pain at the top of his voice. News: The incident has drawn widespread criticism online, with many citizens questioning whether #Bangladesh can claim to have a functional criminal justice system when private individuals can organize and carry out such violent punishments based solely on allegations and suspicions. Critics are asking what the purpose of having courts of law and police is if mobs can effectively take the law into their own hands without any consequences. In his pre-election campaign speeches, PM #TariqueRahman promised to end the culture of mob justice and improve law and order. Yet, once in power, he appears unable to prevent incidents like this. In May 2026 alone, there were 66 reported incidents of mob violence, resulting in the deaths of 31 people and serious injuries to 68 others, according to the Human Rights Support Society (HRSS). .... #BangladeshCrisis #Mobocracy Paulo Casaca Chris Blackburn Dr. Brahma Chellaney Hannah Ellis-Petersen AFP News Agency Cordelia Lynch Mujib Mashal

#Islamist groups have launched a coordinated campaign across #Bangladesh to display a white flag bearing the "Shahadah" (#Islamic declaration of faith) in black. This flag is the official flag of the #Taliban in #Afghanistan, while a black version carrying the same inscription has been used by #terrorist organisations such as #ISIS. Although the Shahadah itself is a sacred Islamic declaration, these specific flag designs have been adopted by #extremist groups, making their public display in this context a matter of concern. The flags are being flown from motorcycles and vehicles and have been erected on roadsides, bridges, and other public spaces. Media reports say they have appeared in at least 12 districts, including several key areas of #Dhaka. A former leader of #HefazatEIslam Harun Izhar, who was jailed under the #AwamiLeague Govt for his extremist preaching and later released during the #Yunus-led interim administration, is believed to be the spiritual force behind the campaign. In a widely circulated video, he instructs his followers: "Put the flag of the Shahadah everywhere. If needed, take down the other flags and put up this one." Despite the scale of the campaign and the obvious security concerns it raises, police say they have not identified those responsible. Witnesses, however, have told local media that #Madrasa students are being used to install the flags. Hefazat leaders also have openly endorsed the campaign. HeI Joint Secretary General Maolana Idris Ali stated: "If a flag with the Shahadah is installed once, it cannot be taken down ever. As an Islamic country, we support this campaign." Associate Professor and #criminology expert Dr. Touhid Hoque of Dhaka University has warned that similar flags have previously been used by extremist groups in Bangladesh. He cautions that this campaign could be a rehearsal for an extremist group to signal its presence and influence, posing a serious risk to Bangladesh's communal harmony. He also urged the authorities to treat the matter with the seriousness it deserves. Video: Times of Bangladesh. #Ganabhaban siege was planned when the #Quota Movement was dying down: #Shibir's top leader brags in public forum. Gradually, the grand narrative re: the Jul-Aug events, that the Awami League Govt fell after spontaneous outburst of general students and people due to disproportionate use of force, is coming apart. After several indicative statements from a no. of #SAD Coordinators which revealed that the protests for job-quotas was basically a cover for forcing the downfall of an elected and constitutional govt (see added tweet), now leaders of Islami Chhatra #Shibir, the student wing of #JamaatEIslami, are also revealing what really happened behind the scenes. Secretary of IC Shibir's Dhaka Uni unit, S M Farhad, recently stated in a public event: "Whenever I see Asif Bhai (SAD Coordinator and currently Adviser in #Yunus-led Interim Govt), I am reminded of one incident. When the #QuotaMovement was losing its steam, he came to our house and drew a map discussing which 5/6 points around Ganabhaban needed to fall for us to take over the establishment. I still have that map preserved with care. In that paper all the points which needed to be captured are drawn." Shibir leaders and activists were heavily involved in the protests against the #SheikhHasina-led Govt with Abdul Kader, one of the key Coordinators of the Students Against Discrimimation Movement even crediting Shibir's Farhad with drafting the nine demands of their movement. See🔽 It is crucial that analysts and researchers take note of these revelations. Assessing the necessity or proportionality of the use of force requires examining what that force was being used against- a peaceful, spontaneous student protest demanding rights or entitlements or a planned and violent insurrection against an elected, constitutional govt (basically the textbook definition of #treason). .......... #BangladeshCrisis Dr. Brahma Chellaney John Rossomando ☦ Stanly Johny Paulo Casaca Chris Blackburn Derek J. After nine and a half months in power, the mob-friendly #Yunus Regime cannot even ensure basic security in court premises: Singer and former MP #MomtazBegum pelted with eggs in full view of a helpless #police force. For the 23rd time since the Interim Govt of #MuhammadYunus took over, a political prisoner has been physically assaulted by mob in court premises in full view of the law enforcers, who don't seem to have the authority to take strict action against such #violence. Celebrated singer turned lawmaker Momtaz Begum is the latest victim of such violence by political mobs. She was pelted with hundreds of eggs while being taken away from court to jail today. Even those in charge of her security were not spared. This has become all too common a scene in #Bangladesh under the Yunus Regime. When a govt cannot even ensure basic security of the high profile accused and lawyers in court, what kind of #justice can they deliver? ..... #BangladeshCrisis Amnesty International Human Rights Watch Elaine Pearson Human Rights Foundation (HRF) Amnesty Internationalsasia Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, & Labor (DRL) Assistant Secretary for DRL Eleanor Sanders The Associated Press Kaja Kallas AFP News Agency European External Action Service - EEAS 🇪🇺 EU Fundamental Rights ➡️ #HumanRights UK Parliament Human Rights Committee Secretary Marco Rubio State_SCA Randhir Jaiswal Dr. S. Scenes from banned #Islamist group #HizbutTahrir's showdown in #Dhaka today: "March for #Caliphate". Defying administration's orders, banned Islamist group Hibut Tahrir, which has the objective of forming a global #IslamicState or Khilafat, today took out their "March for Khilafat" in downtown Dhaka. The march, attended by thousands of the group's followers, led to a clash with the police following Jummah prayers. The rally began from the north gate of Baitul Mukarram Nat'l Mosque. The procession initially proceeded without disruption, but tensions flared as demonstrators moved from Paltan towards Bijoynagar, where police set up a blockade. For the last 7 months, the Interim Govt of Dr. #Yunus has allowed these groups to grow in strength and numbers. #Hizbut even did open recruitment drives in various areas of Dhaka right under the noses of law enforcement agents. Today's showdown was a direct consequence of the Interim Govt's extremely accommodating policy towards such groups and Islamists generally. Now the chickens have come home to roost. ...... #BangladeshCrisis #Islamism #Extremism #Terrorism Randhir Jaiswal Dr. S.
