Mamata Banerjee wanted to lecture Prime Minister Modi on respecting students. Before she does that, West Bengal deserves some answers. Remember Tanya Bharadwaj? A student who asked a question about Trinamool leaders and got called a Maoist by the Chief Minister herself, on a public platform. She eventually had to leave Kolkata. That one incident tells you everything about how this government treats inconvenient voices. Jadavpur University is a great institution. No one is questioning that. What people are questioning is what has happened to it under TMC’s watch. A student was bullied to death on campus. Another died in the campus pond under circumstances that were never satisfactorily explained. Anti-national slogans get raised in the open and life moves on as if nothing happened. Vice-Chancellor appointments have become a political bargaining chip. This has been going on for years. Mamata Banerjee has been Chief Minister through all of it. When PM Modi raises these concerns, he is not targeting students. He is asking the question that the silent, hardworking majority of West Bengal’s youth have been wanting someone to ask for a long time. Here is what makes this complicated for Mamata Banerjee. Her 2011 victory was built partly on ultra-left support. You do not bite the hand that helped you up. So the radical elements on campuses get cover, and students pay the price. West Bengal’s youth deserve better than this. And Mamata Banerjee knows it.

This 366-metre missing link is critical for completing the New Garia-Airport Metro corridor, which will connect Kolkata’s southern suburbs with the IT hub in Sector V. Why was this project stalled for years? Because the Mamata Banerjee government repeatedly denied permission for traffic diversion. RVNL had only sought night traffic blockades over two successive weekends to complete the work. The moment the political obstruction ended, the work moved at speed. For years, Bengal was told delays were “technical”. Turns out, the biggest technical problem was the TMC government itself.
