Honourables from the good August house Elijah Ngurare Manongo, Prof. Job Shipululo AMUPANDA, McHenry Venaani MP, Imms Shawana Nashinge (MP) I just saw a video of someone buying 100L of fuel in Angola for around R500, yet here in Namibia, we pay significantly more, around N$2300.00. Angola is right next door, why can’t Namibia tap into that cheaper fuel Surely this is something worth looking into to ease the cost of living for Namibians.

Most people are blaming NAMRA and calling them greedy but NAMRA is not the problem, they only collect. The real issue is the policy framework set by the Ministry of Finance, Parliament, and SACU. Because how do we justify high import taxes on clothing when Namibia does not have a domestic clothing manufacturing industry to protect? We are discouraging small traders from importing stock, yet we offer no local alternative. High duties + VAT only make goods unaffordable, limit entrepreneurship, and punish young people trying to make a living through reselling. SACU’s tariff system mainly protects South Africa’s textile industry, but Namibia ends up carrying the cost without having the same industries or benefits. Our policies need to reflect Namibia’s economic reality, not South Africa’s. Import taxes should support growth, not suffocate it. It’s time for a serious policy review.
