To understand how Born to Run was made, Thunder Road is almost the perfect case study. At the beginning of 1975, the song already existed, but it was called Wings for Wheels. Bruce even played it at the Main Point in February. Much of its DNA was already there… but something still wasn’t working. What it really lacked was that huge final release. So Bruce kept searching. For weeks. The solution came from another song he had been working on since 1974: Walking in the Street. Instead of trying to save that song, Bruce basically took it apart and salvaged the best pieces: some lyrical ideas found their way into Wings for Wheels, and most importantly, its long instrumental coda became the beautiful, soaring ending we now know from Thunder Road. Even the title came late. Bruce borrowed it from a poster for the Robert Mitchum film Thunder Road — a movie he later said he hadn’t even seen. Then, in April 1975, Jon Landau officially joined the production, the sessions moved to the Record Plant with Jimmy Iovine, and Bruce kept recording and reshaping the song through the final overdubs and mixes that summer. That may be the best way to understand Born to Run: Bruce hardly threw anything away. He dismantled, recycled, rebuilt… until the song finally sounded like the one he had been hearing in his head.
