A son exiled at 7. A mother left behind in occupied Tibet. For 30 years, Gyalpo lived in India, never once seeing his family—forced apart by China’s invasion and brutal occupation of Tibet in 1959. But fate had other plans. On a pilgrimage to Mount Kailash, a traveler who stayed with Gyalpo in Spiti—welcomed like family—entered Tibet and unknowingly met his long-lost relatives. A childhood friend was the driver. A sister owned a restaurant. And when the traveler finally met Gyalpo’s mother, she broke into tears and embraced her son’s friend as if he had brought him home. No words were needed. Just tsampa, a misanga, and a thousand emotions carried through time, distance, and longing. This isn’t just Gyalpo’s story.
