You have no idea how enormous this intersection would be to process the same number of people per hour if they were driving cars.

The people driving benefit greatly from bike infrastructure. Imagine how clogged the street would be if all those people on bikes were in cars instead.

"Cyclists are the most annoying people!"

I had an encounter like this a few days ago. For the next few minutes I replayed the scene in my mind, imagining ways I could've used my bike lock in self-defense. Anecdotes keep piling up about how people drive so much more aggressively post-covid.

The easier it is to hop on a network of bike lanes, the more people ride bikes. Straightforward stuff. Build more bike lanes! 😍🚲

Bicycling is a practical form of transportation when street networks are designed for bicycling to be a practical form of transportation.

I don't like the fact that there are cameras everywhere. But also, without cameras, the attackers get away with: "Officer, the pedestrian came out of nowhere."

Car Brain is when you treat people differently when you're sitting in your car. Once you see it you can't unsee it.

Pretty soon we're going to have a design genre called sprawl-to-trails, similar to rails-to-trails. It'll be one of the popular ways for engineers to repurpose unnecessary infrastructure.

This is so important for Americans to understand.

If this Dutch design was installed in a US city, some bike advocates would call it a failure for not going far enough. Sometimes we get in our own way.

It's often safest for a cyclist to go through a red light. Here's an example of safely keeping momentum. Bicycles and motor vehicles should never be treated as equals, so "but red means stop!" isn't a useful reaction.

Car Brain elevates selfishness to life-threatening levels.

These moms can't see anything important in front of their big SUVs.

A city spent $11.5 million on a streetscape project and within 4 years, they generated $273 million in economic output. Downtown smiles are increasing at an exponential scale.

Driver behavior is out of control. The street is already narrow and already has a stop sign. Engineering can only get you so far without strict traffic enforcement.

So many people are ready to snap and use their vehicles to commit violence, so I'm not recommending this kind of confrontation. Video is another reminder that Car Brain is real and quite dangerous.
