If I could, the player I would take with absolute certainty at no 1 in this year’s draft is not Arki Butler or Harry Van Hattum. His name is Jake Miller. He’s a 197cm contested marking machine from the Western Jets. In the first two national championship games, he’s dragged down a total of 19 marks (5 contested). Unfortunately for the Dons he’s only 17 and not eligible until the 2027 draft.

It was fascinating to hear former Essendon insider Paul Cousins’ preferred candidate to coach the Bombers. He has a soft spot for James Hird but it’s not him. While positive about Hayden Skipworth and James Kelly, it was another assistant coach who spent time at Tullamarine that Cousins thinks Andrew Welsh should talk to: Daniel Giansiracusa. The thing with Robey is it’s much more than just possessions that makes Essendon fans excited. In the last qtr he had 2 or 3 ball ups with Toby Greene as his opponent. It was physical but Robey didn’t retreat. In fact he lapped it up. And in the last contest between the two he won the free kick. Today was only his 5th game. Still just 18. The sky is the limit for this kid.

Over the past 13 months I have travelled all over Victoria to see players in the 2026 draft pool. And here's my footage of the guys I rank in the top 10. With my Essendon hat on I would love to draft Harry Van Hattum. Welsh and Solomon may already have sat down with him. I can see the headline: When Harry Met Solly! Arki Butler would also be a great pick up. Fast, elusive, creative small who can mark. An Essendon fan and grandson of former Bomber Allan Davis. My bolters are Harvie Cooke and Harrison Leeder, both from the Northern Knights. Exclusive footage of my 11-20 rankings, plus my notes on my top 20 players, is on my Patreon (which is $5 per month). There’s also regular Essendon NGA updates, the next being this weekend

In his VFL comeback, Lewis Hayes rarely got beaten despite an avalanche of inside 50s, particularly in the third quarter. Werribee finished with 39 scoring shots. Hayes was rested after three quarter time and got through the game OK. 15 disposals @ 80pc effic 7 Intercept Possessions (Ess high)

Former Essendon director and VFL President Paul Cousins says the club must conduct a thorough process and not just appoint someone “because they are a big name”. When asked about James Hird, Cousins -who was at the club for 9 months when Hird was coach - says Hird has an “incredible footy brain”. Hear more of his thoughts on Hird in the attached audio. For the full 75 minute Cousins interview on the mistakes he believes the club has made, go to

I did dream of Daniher leading Essendon to a flag. He’s got a different jumper on him but good on him. He’s such a rare talent And I’m happy for his Essendon-loving family of parents Anthony and Jo, and brothers big brothers Ned and Darcy. And obviously his uncles! #AFLGF

Dyson Sharp is my no1 pick for the Dons (given Duursma seems unattainable). He has risen to the occasion at every level he has played, including SANFL seniors. He’s that taller two-way midfield runner we need. Some people say he lacks speed. While I don’t think he’d beat Gout Gout, he clearly isn’t slow, as this clip demonstrates Clip from Footy Stuff

You’ll hear a lot of noise from reporters/journalists this week hoping to benefit from Essendon’s perilous position. Some will barrack for the Scott sacking, others will be pushed by their editors and chiefs of staff to find a different Essendon angle every day. They all know Essendon gets clicks and gets eyeballs. What you won’t hear is balance or objectivity. But the Bombers should stay the course. The elite #DonTheStat podcast has been the voice of reason since Friday night. Here’s a snippet from Ian Hume “We have brought in players, we have changed coaches … we have done everything but do things the difficult way. We have tried to make the easy choices in the past 25 years.”

I'm confident the club will make the best decision on the new captain. For me, Andy McGrath is the right man for the right time. He's not the best player on the list and you don't have to be. You only have to look at the likes of Nick Maxwell, Cameron Ling and Shannon Hurn and how they were able to lead. And in the words of Robert Shaw, someone who has known McGrath since he was in Year 8, Andy would be "the best leader, unifier and communicator".

Garry Lyon: Merrett can’t go back but Trac can 🤷♂️ “You’re open for a disgruntled player to walk back into that club… going to make for a difficult environment.” —- “Melb have whip hand here. If there’s not a deal that suits Melb, Christian plays for Melb & I’m happy with that.”
