Happy Teachers’ Day to my favourite primary school teacher, Mr Mwaniki, and to all teachers. Mr Mwaniki taught me English at Pangani Primary School, where he taught from 1977 to 2015. He ran the school library, the most beautiful space in the entire school and my favourite place there. I fell in love with the written word because of his teaching and the way the books in his library were so well arranged and classified. It made me enjoy reading in the school library, and I always looked forward to his classes. He retired in 2015 after a teaching career of 41 years. His love for books has made him allergic to social media and WhatsApp. The only way to reach him is by regular phone call. The first and last time he voted was in 1997, for Charity Ngilu (Masaa ni ya Ngilu). He has grown to hate what Kenya has become because of corrupt politicians and decided never to vote again. However, he looks forward to voting for me in 2027 because, in his own words, he has always believed in me. Happy International Teacher’s Day.

I have been in touch with some Kenyans who are in the Russian military. Our embassy in Moscow has refused to help them, and today they asked me to release their names: 1. Nicholas Kaino Kiprotich 2. Samuel Maina Kariuki 3. Kelvin Lemashon They are in Taunishevka, Western Russia, waiting to be deployed. None of their friends who have been sent to the frontline has come back alive.
