Thomas Hearns spent most of the eighties chasing a rematch with Sugar Ray Leonard and it’s cruel that he was denied the victory he craved. Yet their second fight – at Las Vegas’ Caesars Palace in 1989 – was a two-way thriller and not quite the outrageous robbery that some now label it. Indisputable, though, was Hearns’ excellent performance. Coming into the bout after an unimpressive display against James Kinchen and, on fight day, hearing the news that his younger brother had been charged with murder, the “Hit Man” went about business like a man possessed. He scored two knockdowns, in rounds three and 11, and survived under severe Leonard pressure in the fifth and 12th. The crowd chanted “Bulls**t” after the result – a draw – was announced. The day before the fight, Hearns accused Leonard of using steroids. The claims were laughed off by Sugar Ray and his team. At the time, the Nevada State Athletic Commission tested both fighters for ‘other drugs’ but did not test for PED use.

McClellan, a chilling puncher and the reigning WBC super-middleweight champion, took a knee after nine and a half hellacious rounds and appeared to allow the referee to count him out. Despite no experience, Ellis was able to amass a record of 16 wins and 1 draw in his first seventeen bouts, before the call came to fight former world champion George Foreman, who was on the comeback trail after falling short against Evander Holyfield in his fight prior. Though completely overmatched, Ellis stood toe-to-toe with 'Big George' for three rounds and managed to stay on his feet against the fearsome Texan, however took enough punishment for referee Richard Steele to save him for another day.

In 1987, Sugar Ray Leonard edged Marvin Hagler by split decision at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas in a fight that remains one of the most debated verdicts in boxing history. After the fight, Leonard was asked whether he could have lasted 15 rounds. He replied, “I was exhausted in the 12th round, but I would have found a way to go three more rounds with Hagler.” HBO commentator Larry Merchant then posed an interesting question: could Hagler have insisted that the bout be contested over the traditional 15-round distance instead?
