How Kon Knueppel scores 18.5 PPG with only 2 dribbles per catch One thing that stands out about Kon Knueppel’s game is how quickly he plays without rushing. He doesn’t need the ball to stick. He doesn’t need 10 dribbles. And he doesn’t need a flashy combo move every possession. Kon averaged less than 2 dribbles per touch and possessed the ball only about 7% of the time he was on the floor… Yet he still averaged 18.5 PPG and earned 1st Team All-Rookie honors. That should get everybody’s attention. Because it proves you do not have to dominate the ball to impact the game. You just have to be ready, make quick decisions, and flow into the next action. That’s what makes players like Kon so effective. Shoot off the catch. Attack in straight lines. Land on two feet and finish. If nothing is there… pass, relocate, and keep moving. That’s also one of the things we like about Coach Bob Patton’s Modern Game Shooting workouts. Players aren’t just standing still getting shots up. They’re constantly moving through game-like sequences where they have to prepare, attack, pass, relocate, reset their feet, and flow into the next action without pausing. A lot of modern scoring is about connecting actions together quickly and efficiently. See the complete Modern Game Shooting System here: 📷 The promo ends TONIGHT.

At the NBA level, teams score about .94 points per possession in the half court. In transition, they score 1.24 points per possession! This video breaks down Coach Rob Brost’s “Get Comfortable Playing at an Uncomfortable Pace” system—then shows how the 2024–25 Indiana Pacers applied the same rules on their improbable Finals run. You’ll see the teaching points, then game clips that make it real.

Need a Layup vs the 1-3-1? Run This If you coach long enough, you’ll run into the 1-3-1 zone that completely stalls your offense. Passes get tipped, the ball doesn’t break the arc, and suddenly your players are playing hesitantly instead of attacking. That’s why it helps to have one quick-hitting play you can call at any point in the game — something simple to teach, easy for players to remember, and designed to produce what every coach wants against a zone: an immediate layup look. Here’s a go-to quick hitter from The Complete Zone Offense Blueprint with Ryan Schultz, you can install fast and use the next time a 1-3-1 tries to speed you up. Ryan Schultz

5 Plays To Punish A 2-3 Zone When Rick Pitino was at Louisville, he played a lot of zone. I remember watching an interview with him and he was asked about his new defensive philosophy. He had always been known as a coach who liked to press and play aggressive man to man defense. Something from his answer stuck with me. He said a major reason that he was playing zone was because it made his game prep easier. When coaching man defense, there are countless actions and offenses opponents can run. Against zone, there are a few actions you see over and over again. I think there’s some truth to that. There are only so many zone offenses. If you rely solely on your zone offense, you might end up taking the shots your opponent wants you to take. And that’s why it’s important that you have some plays you can go to that will get you a great shot against a zone. Check out our video “5 Plays To Punish A 2-3 Zone” to make sure you’ve got a bucket in your back pocket when you need one most!

The 1 Drill To Meet All Your Rebounding Needs Some coaches don't believe in doing rebounding drills. They believe they can emphasize rebounding in everything they do without isolating it. I love that in theory. Unfortunately, it hasn't worked that well for me in reality. Coaches like Tom Izzo and Kelvin Sampson seem to agree. Michigan State and Houston are known for being 2 of the best rebounding teams in the country. I don't think it's a coincidence that they prioritize practicing rebounding. If you want your team to be elite on the boards, you must drill it in practice. Here's a versatile and game-like drill from 3v3 Drills For Offense & Defense with Coach Nick LoGalbo that will help your team dominate the glass. Setup: -Position 3 players around the perimeter -3 defensive players are in the paint Instructions: 1. The coach begins by throwing the ball to an offensive player. 2. All of the defenders close out. 3. The player who receives the pass shoots immediately. 4. The defenders must box out and grab the rebound. 5. Play is live until the ball is scored. The rebounding team does not have to take the ball out. Thus, if the defense does a good job boxing out and gathers the rebound close to the rim, they can immediately shoot. This continues until a basket is scored. 6. Each basket is worth 1 point. Play to 5.

The 2-3 Zone That Forces Turnovers Most coaches think a 2-3 zone is passive — something you use to protect the paint. But what if your zone defense could attack instead of react? In this video, we’ll show you how Coach Mike Tartara’s Lockdown 2-3 Zone Defense transforms the traditional zone into a turnover-creating machine, using the same principles that Merrimack College used to become one of the best defensive programs in Division I basketball. The stats don’t lie: -Since going to the 2-3 zone 5 years ago, Coach Tartara’s program has consistently set school records for steals. -Merrimack annually ranks as one of the top turnover-forcing teams in Men’s D1 college basketball. Coach Tartara’s Cuyahoga Heights teams averaged 250+ steals per season after switching to this system — proof that you can win more games while playing zone defense that pressures opponents instead of sitting back. Then, watch Merrimack College execute the same rotations at the D1 level — showing how these high school principles produce elite-level results.

Use THIS Practice Drill To Master Ball Screen Defense In this drill from How To Run Championship Practices, Coach Schultz focuses on the 3 primary coverages his team uses: -Drop coverage -Flat hedge -Trap You might want to include other coverages. That's fine! The drill can easily be adapted to include whatever coverages work best for your team. What's great is your team gets multiple reps working on different coverages. If you do use the trap, use that on the final rep of the drill. This allows the drill to flow more smoothly.Ryan Schultz

Stride Stop 101: The Secret Move That Transforms Your Paint Game During Jay Wright’s tenure, Villanova was known for their ability to play off 2 feet in the paint. It was a separator for them. But what exactly does play off 2 feet mean? It could mean a number of different things. When it comes to playing off 2, one of your best options is the stride stop. Unfortunately, it’s one of the more challenging footworks to teach. While jump stops come naturally to most players, stride stops can be difficult to learn. Many players get frustrated and never master this move. As a result, they limit themselves when they get to the paint. Make sure that’s not the case for you and your players! What Exactly Is a Stride Stop? Unlock This Key Finishing Move What is a stride stop? Like a jump stop, a stride stop is a 2 foot stop. Unlike a jump stop, your feet don’t hit at the same time. Instead, your outside foot hits first. The stride stop is useful in a couple driving situations: -When a help defender comes across to take a charge. -When the on ball defender is physically on the inside shoulder. Coach Matt Lewis teaches the stride stop as a key element of The Flow Motion Offense.
