“SpaceX should not come here at all. Leave us alone.” Governor Jeff Landry confirmed on Tuesday plans for “Starbase Louisiana,” a $100-billion SpaceX launch facility near Louisiana's Pecan Island. "Gator Queen" Liz Choate, former star of "Swamp People," told BT News she and her neighbors have been shut out and kept in the dark about the plans. Elon Musk recently announced a partnership with Nvidia to develop orbital space-based data centers, leading to speculation that the more than 130,000 acres acquired in the Pecan Island land deal could be used for natural gas extraction and solar power infrastructure to support these plans as well. Pecan Island is one of the last undeveloped stretches of Louisiana coastline and is a critical route for migrating birds. It was acquired by the state for SpaceX’s development from Exxon Mobile, which has leased it for public use since the 1950s.

“We’re the Blackest city out here, so they don’t want to check on us.” More than 20,000 residents in Gary, Indiana have been without power for almost two weeks after massive storms tore through the area, knocking down trees and power lines. NIPSCO is the only energy provider in the area, and they reported more than a half a billion dollars in profit in the first half of 2026. “We don’t pay, we get cut off. But when disaster happens, they want to charge us. They have billions of dollars, we’re working day-to-day.” Gary residents are banding together to provide for each other amidst the blackouts, providing community meals and phone charging stations at community centers.

“There are people stuck in their houses who haven’t eaten for days.” Gary, Indiana is still without power. It's been nearly two weeks since unprecedented windstorms knocked out electricity in northwest Indiana on August 11. Residents are still waiting on a response from the government. As many as 10,200 residents of Lake County’s only majority-Black municipality are still relying exclusively on mutual aid to get by, as food banks run short on supplies and families with medically dependent members need gas-powered generators to run breathing machines and other needed equipment. Private electrical utility NIPSCO, facing mounting public pressure over recent billion-dollar investments into new data center infrastructure for Amazon and Google, says full power restoration may not come until Tuesday.

GRAPHIC: CBP officers shoot another person in Minneapolis at point-blank range. Footage obtained exclusively by BT shows federal officers on Nicollet Ave. on top of a man on the ground, before one CBP officer pulls his gun and repeatedly fires. Witnesses say that after the shooting CBP then walked down the block filming bystanders. Nothing else is known at this point about what preceded this, the identity of the man shot, or his current condition. FBI agents and an ambulance are at the scene.
