The mestiza is obese, whereas the castiza is merely overweight. A higher proportion of Amerindian genetics is associated with risk for developing metabolic syndrome, obesity, insulin resistance, and diabetes. The genetic factors involved are not clear, but it may be due to a longer history of adaptation to the carbohydrate heavy diet of agriculture. However, maize-based agriculture was widely practiced in the Americas prior to the Columbian event.
