DR MAKAZIWE MANDELA SPEAKS, AND HER MESSAGE SHOULD SHAKE THE ANC. Dr Makaziwe Mandela has recalled her father Nelson Mandela’s powerful warning: “If the ANC does what apartheid did to you, do it to the ANC.” She goes further to remind us that South Africans have the democratic right to remove a government from power. That is not betrayal. That is democracy. The ANC cannot claim ownership of Mandela’s legacy while ignoring the very principles he stood for. Apartheid did not only oppress people through police brutality and political repression. It deliberately created poverty, dispossession, exclusion and hunger. Today, millions of South Africans still face hunger, unemployment, poverty, inadequate housing, failing services and inequality. When a government fails to confront these conditions after decades in power, ordinary people have every right to ask: what has really changed for the poorest among us? Hunger is also a form of brutality when people are left without meaningful opportunities to survive and dignity is denied. The lesson from Madiba is bigger than party loyalty: no political organisation is above the people. If the ANC fails the people, the people have the ballot, and they have every democratic right to use it. Mandela’s legacy belongs to the people, not to a political party. 4 November 2026 will be another opportunity for South Africans to make their voices heard.
