What happens if you drop an anti-apple? In a paper published today in nature, the ALPHA collaboration at CERN’s Antimatter Factory shows that, within the precision of their experiment, atoms of antihydrogen – a positron orbiting an antiproton – fall to Earth in the same way as their matter equivalents. This result is a milestone in the study of the properties and behaviour of antimatter. Find out more:

Here we see, for the first time ever, the transport of unbonded protons across the CERN site, a big step towards portable #antimatter. CERN’s Antimatter Factory is the only place in the world where scientists can store and study antiprotons. But scientists at the BASE experiment hope to change this state of matter with an apparatus designed to store and transport antimatter. Last week, a team of BASE scientists and engineers took an important step towards this goal by transporting a cloud of 70 protons in a truck across the CERN site. Find out more about this first-time achievement:

The pre-registration for @BeamlineforSchools (#BL4S) is open. Beamline for Schools is a #physics competition open to high-school students from all over the world. If you are a high-school student and would like to conduct a #physics experiment at a particle accelerator, submit a proposal to the Beamline for Schools competition to win the chance to spend two weeks at #CERN or DESY (Deutsch) to perform your experiment. The deadline to submit your experiment proposals is April 10, 2024. Find out more:

Happy 70th anniversary CERN 🎉 #OnThisDay 70 years ago, twelve European countries came together to establish what has become the world’s largest #ParticlePhysics laboratory, home to the #LHC, and where the #HiggsBoson was discovered 12 years ago. In how many ways can you say #HappyBirthday? In this video, representing our 24 Member States, CERN people share their birthday wishes in their native language. #CERN70

Between the 1960s and the mid-1980s, dozens of women worked #AtCERN as “scanners”. Their job consisted in identifying the trajectories of the particles in the images taken inside the bubble chambers. “Scanning” took place around the clock. The work was done manually, using a pencil and a sheet of paper to note down the coordinates of where the interactions had taken place and a description of the interactions. The shifts only lasted four hours since scanners worked in complete darkness, which put a lot of strain on the eyes.

CERN pays tribute to Peter Higgs Peter Higgs’ scientific legacy will extend far beyond the scope of current discoveries. The Higgs boson is linked to some of the most intriguing and crucial outstanding questions in fundamental physics. This still quite mysterious particle therefore represents a uniquely promising pathway to physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics.

Here we see one of the ProtoDUNE particle detectors being filled with liquid argon, a process that takes about two months. The liquid argon’s inert properties facilitate precise measurements, enhancing detection capabilities. ProtoDUNE is a prototype of the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) housed at CERN’s Neutrino Platform. It will use the proton beam from the Super Proton Synchrotron and test and validate the technologies that will be applied to the #DUNEexperiment being built in the United States. Find out more about DUNE and how Fermilab and SanfordLab are involved:

What is dark matter? 🤔 We asked Erwan Robyn, a postdoctoral student, to tell us what is this mysterious matter that makes up 85% of our #Universe, and how is the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) experiment looking for #DarkMatter. Curious to know more? Are you currently in the Geneva (Switzerland) area? On 31 October at 19.30 CET, CERN organises an immersive evening that will take you on a journey from cosmology and #ParticlePhysics to neurosciences. Join us to celebrate #DarkMatterDay at CERN:

Lord of the collider rings 💫 #OnThisDay thirty-five years ago, on 14 July 1989, beams circulated for the first time in the Large Electron–Positron collider (LEP). Three tunnel-boring machines started excavating the tunnel in February 1985 and the 27-kilometre ring – which houses the #LHC today – was completed three years later. Designed to study in detail the (then) recently discovered W and Z bosons, and to look for signs of the #HiggsBoson, LEP was a remarkable machine in many ways and was, at the time, the largest scientific instrument ever made. A new superconducting system for #HiLumiLHC is coming together 🧩 Here, we can see the above-ground facility and test stand, assembled earlier this year, where many of the novel components will be validated together. The high-luminosity upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) aims to increase the number of particle collisions and, consequently, boost the amount of physics data that can be collected by the #LHC experiments by another order of magnitude.
