FULL STORY of the Ugandan Rugby player who was lynched by a mob on mistaken identity. If you have a soft heart, please look away. The intro: Sydney Gongodyo, a 27-year-old Ugandan national rugby team player and forward for the Stanbic Black Pirates, was brutally killed in a case of mistaken identity by a mob in the Kampala suburb of Bukoto on Friday, June 5, 2026. The full chronological events surrounding the tragic incident include: The Incident: Mistaken Identity: On the afternoon of June 5, 2026, real thieves snatched a woman's handbag near the Frobel Stage area in Bukoto, Kampala. The thieves quickly fled the scene on a motorcycle. As the victim raised an alarm to alert the public, Sydney Gongodyo—who was a Makerere University student and simply crossing the road at the exact same moment—was falsely and prematurely assumed by the gathering crowd to be one of the fleeing criminals. The Mob Attack: A chaotic crowd quickly surrounded Gongodyo, launching a fierce assault with stones, kicks, and crude weapons. Video footage captured at the scene showed Gongodyo desperately pleading his innocence to the crowd. However, his cries were ignored. During the attack, a critical blow was dealt when a suspect brought a massive wooden log down on Gongodyo near the roadside, knocking him heavily to the ground, where the crowd continued to beat and kick him from all directions. Medical Response and Demise: Officers from the Uganda Police Force attached to the Kira Road Police Station responded to the commotion and intervened to disperse the mob. They rushed a severely injured Gongodyo to the Mulago National Referral Hospital for emergency medical treatment. Despite the medical efforts, he succumbed to his severe injuries later that evening at approximately 7:00PM.
