Here’s a Magic Johnson highlight you might never see, because it was ruled an offensive foul. This is every Giannis drive you’ve seen in transition for 10 years, but 40 years ago it was illegal. Players were discouraged from plays like this. It wasn’t because they couldn’t.

“This is why no one likes playing against the Pistons.”

For reference this morning, I was rewatching this game 3 from 23 years ago, when the #1 seed Pistons were in the process of losing again to go down 2-1 to 8th seeded Orlando. A lot of relevance here, plus a little foreshadowing.

This day, 2004: After blowing a 2-0 series lead and dropping a heartbreaker game 5 in overtime to fall into a 3-2 hole, the Pistons brought their defense to New Jersey, walked the Nets down and dragged them back to Detroit for a game 7:

I say this every year, but the all-star game really used to be appointment TV, and 1993 was my favorite. I know this type of intensity is never coming back. Not asking for it. Just wanted to show people what it looked like when the 24 best players in the world actually competed.
