Happy Mar10 Day! 🎉 To celebrate, let’s explore one of the most famous glitches in gaming history: the Minus World in Super Mario Bros on the NES! Did you ever find it as a kid, or did you learn about it later? 🍄❤️ Here’s how you get there! Stand at the edge of the pipe in World 1-2, then break the 2nd and 3rd ceiling bricks from the right of the pipe. Face left and jump up and back. Sometimes crouching helps, but isn’t necessary (it helped me). Hit the back of Mario’s head on the left side of the 1st brick. If you hit it just right, you’ll be pulled through the wall. Quickly jump up into the left pipe to reach the Minus World! But there is no escape from the Minus World. It’s an endless water world loop and you’re stuck forever! 🤭 The Minus World is akin to stage 7-2, and is internal NES memory identifies the glitch as “World 36-1.” Only the “-1” is visible, though! The “secret” initially appeared Nintendo Power Issue 3’s “Classified Information” section. Issue 100’s list of 100 best “codes” ever featured the glitch, listed after the Konami Code. I’m a little silly in this video, but I was genuinely surprised I did it! ❤️ I knew about it from Nintendo Power, and saw a friend do it when I was 6 or so, but I never did myself until recently!

Zelda II released for Famicom January 14, 1987 (yes, I’m a few days late!). I honestly love this game and thought it would be fun to cover 10 ways the NES release is different from Famicom! 1. The NES version rewrites the intro, removes the second “n” from Ganon’s and reference to “another” sleeping Zelda, and refers to palaces rather than sanctuaries. 2. NES introduces an ominous red game over screen, removes the second “” from Ganon and incorporates his taunting laugh, which is reused from Mike Tyson’s Punch Out!! (Released September 18, 1987, while the NES version released Dec. 1, 1988). 3. Link’s sprite has a visible mouth in the NES version absent in Famicom’s. 4. Additional Pillars are added to Zelda’s North Palace chamber for NES. 5. Roaming monsters are more distinct in the NES version. 6. Link’s NES raft sprite in faces right while Famicom’s is forward. 7. Famicom used fewer brick palates for Palaces, with NES including more colors. 8. The 4the boss, Carock at Maze Island, only faces forward for Famicom but can face left or right for NES. 9. The 5th Palace boss for Famicom pits players against a stronger version Helmethead reused from the 2nd Palace, while the NES introduces a new boss, Gooma. 10. The River devil appears as an oni (devil) rather than a spider like creature. This is not exhaustive and I’d love to cover more at a later date! Thank you for watching as I try something new!

Nintendo Power’s Counselors’ Corner answered questions from players and the first issue’s first entry shared the notoriously difficult Ghosts ‘N Goblins’ stage select code. To stage select, press right and hit B 3 times; then press up, release, and hit B 3x; then left, release, and hit B 3x; and finally down, release, and press B 3x before pressing start. If you go to the 7th stage, you’ll immediately go to the final boss (Astaroth/Devil). To defeat him, go the edge of the screen and move/jump repeatedly while pressing attack to strike his 2nd face (on his belly). Once you defeat him, you’ll be told the room is an illusion, then will need to restart to get the true ending! Thankfully the stage select option remains and you can immediately face the final boss again and rescue the princess for the “Happy End!” I had fun going through this Nintendo Power, doing the code, and “beating” the game, and thought this would be fun to share!

Recently I rewatched Captain N: The Gamemaster’s Quest for the Potion of Power Episode and was inspired to make a video showing Zelda II references! It has Rauru, Parapa, the annoying centipedes, Horsehead, Moas, hidden tunnels, Iron Knuckle, the Reflect spell, and more!
