Rockets coach Ime Udoka on meltdown late in regulation: "Want to say youth or scared of the moment, whatever the case. You have a 6-point lead with 20 or 30 seconds to go, get a rebound, just got to hold the ball and get fouled. .And the final play, we didn't run what we drew up"

Houston Rockets guard Reed Sheppard refused to make excuses for his critical turnover and role in meltdown even when a reporter tried to offer him one based on his playoff inexperience. "No, I played basketball long enough," Sheppard says. "Dribbling up the court with 30 seconds left is dribbling up the court with 30 seconds left. "There's never an excuse - he hasn't been in a playoff game, he hasn't been in that environment. It doesn't matter. It's just simple basketball. "I should have made the right play and not turned it over. That was the one thing that could beat us - was a turnover and a three in that situation. So no."

Houston coach Kelvin Sampson on where UH athletics was when he first arrived and where it still needs to go: "We were closer to Texas Southern than we were Texas," Sampson says of those dark early days. "We had no money. We had no money. . . "I don't have a lot more years left and that's fine. So I can say things like this. I'm saying it for (women's basketball coach) Matt (Mitchell). And I'm saying it for (football coach) Willie (Fritz). I'm saying it for our volleyball, our swimming and diving. I'm saying it for our new baseball coach. "We've got to be supported at a higher level." PaperCity Magazine video

University of Houston coach Kelvin Sampson remembers how fearful NBA front offices acted when it came to Jamal Shead in the draft. ESPN Big 12 guru Fran Fraschilla tried to tell everyone he knew in the league what they were missing. Now Shead, coming off an 18 point, 7 assist, two steal playoff game, is a huge reason why the Toronto Raptors have pushed the favored Cavs to a Game 6 tonight. "There's nothing that boy does that surprises me," Sampson says. "I just remember how fearful a lot of the teams were that were calling. Scared money don't make money, brother. "If you knew him like I knew him, you wouldn't be sitting there asking questions. But the questions you're asking me, you're trying to talk yourself into him. And I'm not going to do that." Instead Sampson wanted Shead to go to an NBA team where he'd be valued.

Houston's Kingston Flemings fights off tears as he faces another season ending. "I don't know why," Flemings says. "I don't know if it's something I'm doing wrong or something. It's the same thing that happened in high school. We played Bellaire... and same thing happened here."

Houston Rockets forward Jabari Smith Jr. on what this young core learned having to play without Kevin Durant this playoff series: "I think playing without him just showed me how much we need to work on as far as just being able to do more. Everybody say they want more. More of an offensive role. More shots. More touches. But don't know what come with it. "To be able to play against all types of defenses and adjust on the fly is something that is a skill. Something that I've got to get better at." Very mature outlook from the 22-year-old Smith on the reality of the responsibility that needs to come with guys wanting bigger roles.

University of Houston coach Kelvin Sampson on players graduating: "All our kids graduate every year. Every year. Our graduation rate is probably over 90 percent, because I can count on one hand the ones who haven't graduated. . . Kingston (Flemings) will go to the NBA, he's not going to graduate. (NBA Lottery prospect) Chris (Cenac Jr.) won't graduate. But hopefully one day they will. "But all the kids that stay here will graduate. You play four years here, you're going to graduate. And it's not because of me or our program. It's because of their mothers and fathers. I had a great college coach. He had nothing to do me graduating from college. "That's my Mom and Daddy. "

University of Houston baseball coach Todd Whitting expects he'll meet with AD Eddie Nunez soon, possibly as early as today, as his future is decided. Whitting to PaperCity Magazine on if he's thought that this could be it, that this game could have been his last as UH's coach: "Till I'm not the head baseball coach here, I am. I love this university. I love the people in it. "Those guys on the field. The coaching staff. All those people sitting up in the stands. It's a great place. It's a great university. It has great leadership. I look forward to seeing what's ahead at the University of Houston."

Kelvin Sampson with an impassioned call for University of Houston pride at crowded Coaches' Caravan event in Sugar Land: "I don't know about this commuter school bullshit... We're the University of Houston. We're the University of Houston. Don't you take a backseat to nobody. "Don't talk to me about U of T. Or Texas A&M. We just played Texas A&M, right. How'd that go? ". . . We have respect for everybody in this state. We have respect for everybody in this conference. But we don't take a backseat to nobody. And neither should you. "Quit acting like these teams are up here. No, they're not. You're up here. Start acting like it. Start supporting this program."

University of Houston coach Kelvin Sampson on building a team in this transfer portal era: "I don't know what to do with 15 scholarships. Just because you have something doesn't mean you have to do it. Because you have to think of your roster value. . . I think having some guys that can redshirt. I think one of the great values was Bryce (Jackson) redshirting (this last season). Chase McCarty redshirting (the year before). Justin Gorham redshirting. Chris Harris redshirting... "Next year's team is going to have some guys that are going to have opportunities to be pros. JoJo (Tugler) is going to be right there. Some other guys."

Astros owner and Houston PGA Tour event savior Jim Crane tells PaperCity Magazine that a Major winner went out of his way to give Memorial Park major praise. "We got a note from Adam Scott that says it's the best conditioned course he's played all year," Crane says. "And that makes them interested. . . We have the greatest greenskeeper in town, or in the United States, to make it happen." Great course conditions are part of Crane's selling push to make the Houston Open a PGA Tour Signature Event with a mega purse that all the top players in the world would play year after year.

Masters week is here and a dream fathers-sons trip to Augusta set up by Jim Nantz for Kelvin and Kellen Sampson last April helped UH's coach recharge after that incredible run to the national championship game. Here is Sampson sharing the story of his close encounter with Scottie Scheffler with PaperCity Magazine. "I was standing as far as me to you when Scheffler gave the green jacket to (Rory) McIlroy," Sampson says. "Scheffler walks by and says, 'Coach, I had you in the bracket.' I said, 'So did I.' "Jim's special, man. When you talk about the great Cougars, and great people, and great alumni. He's just normal. He's just one of us. And I've always appreciated him for that."
