So I have a big announcement. I thought they were going to wait until the more formal announcement, but two weeks ago they let the cat out of the bag:) I have just been appointed Creative-in-Residence at the London School of Economics. The kind of unexpected news that blows your mind. Many years ago I made a decision that changed my life: Focus on the work, never hustle, and let the universe do the rest. After Yale and Oxford and all of that, I decided I would no longer apply for any fellowships or residencies. I wanted only to be invited - based on the impact of our work. I was almost certain it would take about 10 years for any of that to happen (I mean, who do you think you are?) and I was comfortable with that consequence. I would focus on the work I had chosen. And then, in the midst of inevitable doubt, the universe always sends a big message of affirmation. I am honoured and thankful. I look forward to collaborating with the school’s faculty, students and networks to accelerate the growth of the creative economy across Africa. The work continues❤️

This was the most beautiful and hopeful part of this interview. Micheal says he wants to apologise to his mother someday for all the things he thought about her before he finally met her. She says to him that he has nothing to apologise for - it’s his parents who owe him an apology. You could hear a pin drop in the studio. I sat with these two for hours and watched them wrestle in real time with what to share and what to withhold. I saw Suzanne break down in one of the most horrendous bout of tears I have ever seen, which she asked me not to air so that people can focus on the issues. “It was not called NSPPD from the start. It was after a while we said ‘this thing we are doing, what’s the name?’. We didn’t have a name for it. I didn’t know that people can be famous by praying. “Let me be honest, you see this thing I do, anybody who knows me knows that, that is not me. Coming every morning ‘Fire! Fire!’, it’s not me. For the first time ever, Chimamanda tells me exclusively why she spoke up about having her twin boys through a surrogate. “I felt that there were many women who would then be pressured by people saying ‘look Chimamanda is 47 and she had kids at that age, what about you?’. “And just in general, I think there is so much shame around issues of fertility, that I just think it’s too much of a burden for women.
