TBM Peacock Breakthrough at Kodambakkam Ramp Chennai Metro Rail Limited is in the process of implementing the much anticipated Phase 2 project across Chennai City in full swing with three corridors for a total length of 118.9 km. CMRL has reached a significant milestone in its Phase 2 expansion with the successful breakthrough of Tunnel Boring Machine “Peacock” (DL 1074) at Kodambakkam Ramp Retrieval shaft near Meenakshi College at Arcot Road today (23.07.2025). This achievement marks a major step forward in the development of Corridor 4, which will span 26.8km from Light House to Poonamallee Bypass. The TBM Peacock tunnel drive, which commenced on May 02, 2024, from Panagal Park Crossover towards Kodambakkam Ramp Retrieval Shaft, has covered a bored tunnel length of 2047m. The main challenge for this tunnel boring was that it had to pass through 190 no’s of building mostly residential out of which more than 50 no’s of buildings were old buildings. Also the TBM had to bore parallel to the active railway line before crossing the multiple railway tracks. The TBM also passed through two churches and below the Kodambakkam flyover. Despite the challenges, this is the longest tunnel of phase 2 with 2.047 km has been achieved without any disturbance to the public and existing traffic. Thiru. T. Jaspreet Singh Kocher (Chief Resident Engineer- GC), & Thiru. Subhasish Mukherjee (Project Director - ITD Cem), Thiru. M.G. Sambosankaran (Project Manager – ITD Cementation), & other senior officials and staff from CMRL, GC and ITD Cementation India Ltd were present during the event. Corridor 4, which includes 12 underground stations and 18 elevated stations, is part of CMRL's extensive infrastructure development plan, funded by bilateral and multilateral funding agencies such as ADB, AIIB, and NDB. The 10.03 km underground section of Corridor 4 from Light House Station to Kodambakkam Flyover is being executed by ITD Cementation India Limited, with the mobilization of 4 TBMs. This achievement demonstrates CMRL's commitment to expanding Chennai's metro rail network and providing efficient, reliable transportation to the city's growing population. #chennaimetro #cmrl #metrorail #phase2 #chennai

ஆயிரம் விளக்கு மெட்ரோ இரயில் நிலையத்தில் பயணிகளின் நுழைவு மற்றும் வெளியேற்றத்தை எளிதாக்குவதற்காக தானியங்கி கட்டண நுழைவுவாயில் பயன்படுத்தும் முறையில்மாற்றம் சென்னை மெட்ரோ இரயில் நிறுவனம், ஆயிரம் விளக்கு மெட்ரோ இரயில் நிலையத்தில் பயணிகளின் நுழைவு மற்றும் வெளியேற்றத்தை எளிதாக்குவதற்காக தானியங்கி கட்டண நுழைவுவாயிலில் ஒரு புதிய முறையை சோதனை அடிப்படையில் செயல்படுத்தியுள்ளது. ஆயிரம் விளக்கு மெட்ரோ இரயில் நிலையத்தில் உள்ள அனைத்து தானியங்கி கட்டண நுழைவுவாயில்களும் காலை08:00 மணி முதல் 11:00 மணி வரை மற்றும் மாலை 05:00 மணிமுதல் 08:00 மணி வரை “Normally Open” முறையில் செயல்படஉள்ளன. இந்த முயற்சி, நெரிசல் மிகு நேரங்களில் பயணத்தை எளிதாக்கவும், பயணிகள் நீண்ட வரிசையில் நிற்க்கும் நேரத்தை குறைப்பதையும் நோக்கமாகக் கொண்டது. Normally Open முறையின் கீழ், தானியங்கி கட்டண நுழைவுவாயில்களின் கதவுகள் திறந்த நிலையில் இருக்கும், இதனால் பயணிகள் விரைவாகக் கடந்து செல்ல முடியும். எனினும், பயண கட்டண சரிபார்ப்பை உறுதி செய்யும் வகையில், பயணிகள் தங்கள் பயண அட்டை அல்லது QR பயணச்சீட்டை தானியங்கி கட்டண நுழைவுவாயில்களில் ஸ்கேன் செய்ய வேண்டும். i. பயணச்சீட்டு சரிபார்ப்பு வெற்றிகரமாக இருந்தால், பச்சைவிளக்கு தெரியும், மேலும் பயணிகள் தானியங்கி கட்டண நுழைவுவாயிலை கடந்து செல்லலாம். ii. சிவப்பு விளக்கு தெரிந்தால் அல்லது எந்த பதிலும் கிடைக்காவிட்டால், பயணிகள் மீண்டும் முயற்சிக்கவேண்டும் அல்லது பயணச்சீட்டு கவுண்டர்களில் பயணச்சீட்டை சரிபார்க்க வேண்டியது அவசியம் iii. சரியான பயணச்சீட்டு இல்லாமல் நுழைய முயற்சித்தால், தானியங்கி கட்டண நுழைவுவாயில்களின் கணினி அமைப்பு தானாகவே கதவுகளை மூடிவிடும், அதனால் அங்கீகரிக்கப்படாத நுழைவு தடுக்கப்படும். உதவி அல்லது கருத்துகளை தெரிவிக்க, மெட்ரோ இரயில் நிலையத்தில் உள்ள பணியாளர்களை அணுகலாம், அல்லது என்ற இணையதளத்தில் உங்கள்கருத்துகளை தெரிவிக்கலாம். #chennaimetro #chennai #metrorail #cmrl

Phase II/CP30/TU-01/ – TBM Kolli (S 81) Breakthrough at Otteri shaft Chennai Metro Rail Limited has commenced the expansion of the Chennai city’s metro rail network as part of Phase II after the successful completion of the Phase I and Phase I Extension. CMRL has ventured into an extensive infrastructure development in the city comprising of three more corridors of metro rail for a total length of 116.1 km. Corridor 3 comprising a total alignment length of 45.4 km from MadhavaramMilk colony to Siruseri Sipcot will be spanning across the north to south direction of the Chennai city and has a total of 28 underground stations and 19 elevated stations. Corridor 4 is an east west alignment for a length of 26.1 km connecting the beach front from Light House station to the Depot at Poonamallee has 9 underground stations and 18 elevated stations. Corridor 5 also begins at Madhavaram Milk colony and connects through Koyambedu, Porur, Alandur and other residential/commercial development of the city to Shollinganallur for a total length of 44.6 km with 6 underground stations and 39 elevated stations. The tunnel construction for the first 9 km underground section of Corridor 3 from Madhavaram Milk Colony to Kellys is being executed through M/s Tata Projects limited and mobilized 7 TBMs for the tunnelling works. The TBM Kolli (S 81) tunnel drive started on 11.07.2023 from AyanavaramStation to Otteri station (Up line), covered a bored tunnel length of 903 m and break-through done at Otteri shaft on 29.08.2024. This is the 6th TBM breakthrough carried out by M/s Tata Projects Limited under TU-01 contract. As a whole, CMRL has completed 7 TBM breakthroughs in phase-2 project. The tunnel section between Ayanavaram and Otteri is the most complex tunnel section under the contract TU-01 with major challenges, such as the TBM S 81 (Kolli) first 500m tunnel drive negotiated with sharp 220m radius curve and the last 200m tunnel drive with 280m radius curves. Also, this tunnel drive completed with major challenges such as passing through densely populated areas and addressing more than 100 No. of bore wells along the alignment by providing alternate sources without any issue to the public. The complete tunnel drive was well managed within the allowable minimum settlements and extensive instrumentation and monitoring was ensured throughout the drive. Thiru T.
