If you're a coach that plans your practices, read this: Your comfort level with chaos will determine your trajectory as a coach. Are you comfortable with messy? Don’t expect non-messy practices to transfer skills into the chaos of games. They won’t. The messy reality of games demands a level of chaos in practice. During practices, I've found that coaches are either: 1. Avoiding Mess 2. Allowing Mess 3. Building Mess What do you do? Some coaches avoid mess. Their practices are clean, but the drills they run don't transfer into games. Other coaches let their practices get messy, but it makes them uncomfortable. A #SAVIcoach understands the messiness of the game and embraces it. Wide open layups, dribbling without a defender, these things rarely happen in game. That's why a #SAVIcoach doesn't spend much time practicing them. Practicing layups and ball-handling against a defense is not clean at all. It's messy. It's also what actually transfers to games. Many coaches don't embrace messy because our brain is designed to find the path of least resistance. Messy is hard. It's easy to stay away from what makes you uncomfortable. Messy is a good thing. The more I coached, the more I said, "my bad". As a younger coach I would get frustrated when a drill wasn't done correctly and blame "them." As an older coach, I realized it's almost always my fault when that happens. Vulnerability will change your program.
