Joe Mazzulla & 2025-26 Season Playbook Trailer: Using Non-Shooter Bigs in Transition We all know this: A stretch big is indispensable for an effective transition. But what about non-shooter bigs? Beyond using them as rim runners or drag screeners, what else can we do? Joe Mazzulla has another idea; he uses Neemias Queta and Luke Garza (yes, he can shoot) as early flare or stack screeners to counter transition defenses for long close-outs, creating open 3s for Boston's stars. Also, an early screen after a defensive collapse means an early switch. These days, every team tries to find a perfect mismatch to attack. But when the defense is balanced, they can answer that search with early switches or traps, and they can hide the weakest point of their defense. So, when the offensive team starts to play with pace and adds screens like an early flare, they'll catch that perfect matchup more economically. This is because defenses are more adapted to switch all after the first switch happens, and they don't have that safety zone for an early switch. I talked about this point in the Pistol Slip actions that I shared in the Rick Carlisle/Indiana Pacers 2024-25 Season Playbook, which is pinned on my profile. Also, Neemias Queta is currently 6th in the league for Screen Assists (3.8 per game) and 4th for Screen Assist Points (9.2 PPG). This is one of the explanations for why Joe Mazzulla's team ranks 2nd in Offensive Rating, even without Jayson Tatum.

Jordan Ott & Opener, Elbow, Over to Chicago, Spain, called by "Chest #5" Obviously, every coach has to draw something for their star, but as we all know, nobody wins alone. So, Coach Ott tries to create a possession without Devin Booker on the first offense of the Play-in. There is a Chicago action before the Spain PnR, with Booker on the next, so there is no next jump for a more comfortable dribble. This means an easy basket from a simple and effective play.
