It’s heartbreaking to learn through allegations made today, that some leaders in our country are either working with drug lords, part of drug syndicates, or protecting drug criminals. As someone who despises drugs, with everything in me, this is deeply painful. Drugs have ravaged our youth, creating unemployed and unemployable young people across South Africa. To hear that certain leaders might be complicit in these syndicates is infuriating and hurtful to the core. The DA’s latest plan to scrap BBBEE, affirmative action, and other redress laws is proof that they have never believed apartheid truly existed in South Africa. They ignore that black people were deliberately dispossessed of land, wealth, and economic opportunities in their own country. They want the child of a farm worker to “compete on merit” with the child of a farm owner who inherited stolen land, generational wealth, and privilege, as if we all started from the same place. That’s not merit, that’s maintaining inequality.
