Monica Emad, a 22 year old Coptic student, was slapped on the face by a total stranger on a Cairo city bus while assisting a senior who was trying to disembark. In a crowded public bus line 308 in Al-Khosous, Qalyubia Governorate, Egypt, Monica Emad was commuting to her institute when a male passenger aggressively confronted her over a vacant seat he claimed to be reserving for another woman; after she objected that she had no intention of sitting and that he had no right to control public seating, he verbally insulted her with “Hush… shut up,” then slapped her face forcefully, prompting her to quickly capture his image on her phone amid rebukes from other passengers, before he fled as the bus stopped, leading her to file police report number 1127 at Al-Khosous station with confidence in his arrest based on the evidence.

Silvana Atef, 17, was diagnosed with a mental disability that left her thinking and behaving like an 8 year old. Silvana was abducted by a Muslim man, Saher Mohamed Ragab, whose dad is a police officer. When her family reported her disappearance to the police, they were told that Silvana chose to convert to Islam to marry Saher, whom she never knew before the incident. Even though at 17 she would be considered a minor in Egyptian law, regardless of her mental condition, the police were willing to collaborate with her abductor according to the family.
