One of the major tests in psychology for self-awareness is the Mirror Self-Recognition Test (MSR). This is used for both humans and animals. Most animals do not pass the test; humans from different racial groups pass the test at different ages (on average). Here are some relevant data: * White children, on average, pass the test at 18 to 24 months (with some passing much earlier). While there are no comprehensive datasets for Africa, there are a number of good country-level studies, e.g.: * Kenya: Only <5% of children 18–72 months passed the test. * Zambia: Only <20% of children 15–18 months passed the test. Which is to say that this dog is performing better on the test than the overwhelming majority of black children.
