Hundreds of foreigners from 48 different countries are currently being held by Ukraine as prisoners of war after fighting for Russia. Many of them have already spent more than two years in captivity. The I Want to Live project has identified over 28,000 foreign nationals serving in the Russian military. At least 5,149 are confirmed dead and that’s only the ones that have actually been identified. Ukraine went through tooth and nail to get myself and 9 other foreign volunteers released, because they believed their people were worth bringing home. Meanwhile Russia refuses to do the same for the foreigners who fought under its flag, even when there’s a real chance those men could go home, whether that’s to Russia or back to the countries they originally came from. That alone says everything. Russia was willing to use these foreigners to fight and die for them, but when it comes to getting them back, they don’t seem to care at all. A simple foreigners for foreigners exchange could bring a lot of these men home, yet Russia still refuses.

🇷🇺 Meanwhile in Russia A Brazilian volunteer who fought for the Russian army might get kicked out of the country and jailed back home and Moscow won’t even give him citizenship. 31 year old Rafael (not his real name) moved to Russia, got married, converted to Orthodoxy, and threw himself into Putin’s war as proud cannon fodder. He fought in Donetsk, helped storm Avdiivka and now dreams of signing a full contract with the Russian military. The catch? Russia doesn’t want him. He’s applied for citizenship multiple times, but keeps getting denied likely because he’s not part of the right mob tied diaspora or doesn’t have the right connections in the propagandldist area. Now he hides his face in fear of being deported and imprisoned in Brazil. Meanwhile, Ukraine treats its foreign defenders with dignity and respect 🙏

Throwback to 2017, when my friends and I joined the Northern Sun Battalion, a former FSA unit within the SDF. They embodied the true spirit of a free Syria. Sadly, the Free Syrian Army no longer represents its original purpose and meaning, it was hijacked by extremists. it's clear that the regime is terrible, but let’s not fool ourselves into thinking HTS are liberators. Both sides are equally destructive, and in the end, it’s the Syrian people who will suffer most. That said, I can only hope they take down as many Russians and jihadists in their ranks as possible.

As awkward or cheesy as it may sound, I made a promise to a friend while we were in captivity that I’d learn the Ukrainian national anthem once I was free. During that time, we were forced to sing the Russian anthem or face beatings. There was even a day we had to sing from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., only stopping to eat. So, as cringe as it might come across, I kept my promise. I'm still working on the pronunciation, but at least I’m doing it by choice and that means everything to me. 😅

Here's another Local Ukrianian Hero I feel more people should know about, He goes by Uncle Grisha (дядя гриша) during my whole time In service in the Ukrainian marines I have seen him on many occasions during Military celebrations in Mykolaiv collecting money to help units on the frontline, although I never interacted with him it was always nice to see him at various Celebrations. He was previously drafted in the Soviet Airborne and was injured during his deployment in 1968 as part of a limited contingent of Soviet troops to Czechoslovakia. He later had to have his legs amputated but that didn't stop him from achieving and setting out to do what was needed in life, later on after the events of 2014 He went on to collect Money for the military and become quite a Local legend amongst those in the military. However Last year when Russia invaded and occupied Kherson his home town, he refused to leave and amongst those in the community who know of him they tried to find out if he had left but they later learned he refused to leave his hometown and continued Rasing money for the Ukrainian forces. Two of the videos I added show him riding through the market in Occupied kherson in traditional Ukrainian clothing while blasting the Ukrainian Anthem with a bucket for Donations and the other video is another occasion when he was spotted riding through playing a pro Ukrainian song. He had said during his whole 7 months in occupation the vast majority of Russian soldiers left him alone thinking he was an Afgan Veteran and said he mostly had a few comments from local collaborators. He was forced to leave on the eve of the false Referendum after receiving threats from the FSB and left for zaporizhzhia. The bravery and determination in this man is amazing and everyone should know about this Local hero because I haven't once seen him spoken about in the west outside of Ukrainian media. Heroyam Slava

A Russian "SMO participant" shares how his son back in Chelyabinsk was repeatedly beaten and harassed by groups of older Muslim teens, while local authorities stood by and did nothing. And what’s his response? Not to go home and protect his kid. No he chooses to stay in Donbas, risking his life so Ukrainian kids can suffer just like his own. That’s the mindset of these so called liberators.
