He had bought into the idea that the conflict was fundamentally about “settlements.” At that exact moment, the Palestinian Authority’s own terror arm — the Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades (Fatah) — sent a 17-year-old girl, Ayat al-Akhras, to blow herself up at a supermarket in Jerusalem. She murdered two Israeli civilians and wounded 28 others. This was everyday life for Israelis during the Second Intifada — the same “intifada” so many activists today want to “globalize.” Netanyahu, then a senior Likud MK under Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, cut through the illusion in real time. To the Palestinian movement, every inch of Israel is a “settlement.” The problem was never 1967. It was always 1948 — and the very existence of a Jewish state in any part of the Land. The Palestinian cause has never been about building a state next to Israel. It has always been about destroying the one already there.

On This Day — May 17, 1939: Britain Appeased the Arabs & Condemned Europe’s Jews to the Holocaust As Jews across Europe were being beaten, robbed & deported after Kristallnacht, Britain joined the side of their persecutors by issuing the infamous White Paper of 1939 — one of the most disgraceful acts of appeasement and betrayal in modern history. First they appeased Hitler at Munich. Then they appeased the Mufti of Jerusalem and Arab violence. At the worst possible moment, Britain illegally slammed the last escape door shut on Europe’s Jews. The White Paper drastically restricted Jewish immigration to a trickle and made any further entry subject to Arab consent — which the Arabs had already made clear would be zero. Jewish land purchases were brutally restricted. This was not policy. This was betrayal. Britain had been granted the Mandate for Palestine by the League of Nations via unanimous international treaty specifically to establish a Jewish national home and encourage close Jewish settlement. The League’s own Mandates Commission reviewed the White Paper and declared it illegal — a clear violation of the Mandate. Britain simply ignored the League and enforced it anyway. The Jews begged for their lives. Britain gave them a death sentence. Hundreds of refugee ships were turned away. British forces fired on many. The Struma — carrying 769 Jews, including 70 children — was refused entry and later sunk. One of many such tragedies. Britain’s policy trapped Jews in Europe with nowhere to run as the Holocaust began. By closing the gates while the Nazis prepared the gas chambers, Britain became complicit in the scale of the systematic, industrialized genocide. At least hundreds of thousands of Jews who could have reached safety in the Land of Israel were instead exterminated. The British didn’t just fail the Jews. They actively helped ensure that when the Nazis came for them, there was no place left in the world to which they could escape. That is why a strong, sovereign Israel is not optional — it is an existential necessity. Never again will Jews depend on the mercy of empires that appease our enemies and abandon us to slaughter. Never again will we trust “guarantees” from powers that fold, betray, or look away when it matters most.

In 1940, this Polish cavalry officer deliberately got himself arrested during a Nazi roundup in Warsaw. Using a false identity, he entered hell as prisoner #4859. For two and a half years, Pilecki lived as a starving skeleton in striped rags while secretly building a resistance network inside the camp. He smuggled out the first detailed eyewitness reports of the Nazi death machine to the Allies — gas chambers, selections, medical experiments, and the systematic murder of Jews. While he was there, more than 1,000 Jews per day were being gassed and burned. At its peak in 1944, the killing rate reached more than 6,000 per day. He saw it all. He documented it all. He risked everything so the world would know. In April 1943, Pilecki escaped by overpowering a guard at a bakery outside the wire. He rejoined the fight, battled in the Warsaw Uprising, and later resisted the Soviet occupation of Poland. Here’s how he escaped justice for his war crimes (spoiler alert: blame France again!). First, the Mufti landed his plane in Bern, Switzerland and begged for asylum. The Swiss said no. They detained him and immediately handed him over to French authorities. What happened next is one of the most brazen post-war scandals in modern history. Abdullah had long kept private contacts with Zionist leaders. He dreamed of a Greater Syria under Hashemite rule and saw cooperation with the Jews as strategically useful. In their November 1947 meeting, he had hinted at possible accommodation. But by May 1948, the Arab world was locked in rejection. Abdullah told Golda he was now “one of several” — no longer free to act alone. Egypt, Syria, Iraq, and Lebanon were all committed to destroying the Jewish state the moment it was born. He still wanted peace with his Jewish neighbors. But he felt trapped. Before they parted, the King looked at Golda and said these remarkable words: “I believe with all my heart that divine providence has brought you back here, restoring you to the Semitic East which needs your knowledge and initiative. Conditions are now difficult, but be patient.” It was a poignant, almost prophetic farewell. King Abdullah paid for his pragmatism with his life. On July 20, 1951, while visiting Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, he was assassinated by a local Arab gunman acting on orders from the ex-Mufti of Jerusalem and Nazi war criminal, Amin al-Husseini. Peace with Jews was considered treason. This became a tragic pattern: moderate Arab leaders who dared acknowledge Jewish rights or seek accommodation were sidelined, exiled, or killed. From 1948 onward, maximalist rejectionism has been rewarded while moderation has been punished. Yet the Jewish state survived — and thrived anyway.

After the imam’s sermon at Al-Aqsa, the cry “Attack the Jews” spread through the crowd. Mobs poured out of the mosque into the Jewish Quarter of the Old City. Armed with clubs, knives, sabres, and pitchforks, they beat, stabbed, and murdered. Seventeen Jews were killed that day. The violence exploded outward. In Hebron the next day, 67 Jews (mostly Orthodox men, women, and children) were slaughtered in two hours. British officer Raymond Cafferata later testified that he saw an Arab cutting off a Jewish child’s head with a sword. He shot the attacker. Moments later, he found an Arab policeman from Jaffa bending over a blood-covered Jewish woman with a dagger in his hand. Most Arab policemen refused to intervene or joined the rioters. The atrocities were systematic and sadistic: eyes gouged out, breasts mutilated, rabbis castrated, yeshiva students’ throats slit one after another, girls and grandmothers gang-raped. A baker was bound and roasted alive. In one house the only object left intact was a portrait of Theodor Herzl, which the killers draped with a woman’s blood-soaked underwear. 60% of Jewish villages across British Mandate Palestine were attacked, six were completely wiped out. Safed was hit next. Eighteen more Jews murdered. Final toll: 133 Jews killed, 339 wounded. The ancient Jewish communities of Hebron and Safed were erased. Survivors were evacuated under British escort. Hebron remained Judenrein for decades. This was a coordinated pogrom of murder, mutilation, and terror directed at Jews almost two decades before Israel’s independence.

One proud Muslim led his family away with Torah scrolls from a synagogue and a carton of matzos balanced on his daughter’s head.
