Thiago Maas fell in love with CrossFit and opened CrossFit Pomerode in Brazil. For years, he balanced a busy life working on the police force, training to be a competitive athlete, and running his affiliate, carrying the demands of three jobs. One day during training, something felt wrong. Maas went about his day before eventually realizing he needed medical attention. At the hospital, he learned he was having a heart attack caused by a genetic condition. The cardiologist told him that the fitness he had built through CrossFit had prepared his body to withstand the heart attack and he would make a full recovery. The experience changed Maas' perspective on training and on life. He used to train to compete. Today, as a full-time coach, his goal is to help others become stronger and more capable for life, and to survive, he says. And by his own measure, he’s never been happier. Catch Thiago's full story, releasing next Tuesday. #CrossFit

After a text from her daughter about CrossFit, Silvia decided to check out CrossFit Watsonville — and it changed her, not just physically, but mentally. While most people think of CrossFit as a physical thing, for Silvia, it was mental: CrossFit saved her. The community welcomed her immediately and supported her through a difficult time. The physical transformation came as a bonus — she's doing things she never thought possible, like deadlifting, running, and jumping. "I didn't think I could run," she says, "and I can run!" #CrossFit

She carried that resilience with her when she moved to the United States — where she eventually found CrossFit. At Mako CrossFit, she discovered more than a workout; she became part of a community. When she faced a devastating breast cancer diagnosis, followed by surgery and months of grueling treatment, the thing she looked forward to most was getting back to the gym floor and to her Mako family.
