I like that classic horror filmmaking tricks of getting a contortionist or someone with unusual proportions as practical effects has translated to other media. The Exorcist spider walk clearly inspired this awesome scene in Koudelka, but can be taken to an extreme in video games

some trivia: this guy is a international level bboy named Atsuki from Naruto Japan and Real Akiba Boyz. He hosts Akibaccano--underground dance battles where they dance to anime songs. If you're a Miku fan, you will recognize him as breakdancing Miku from that old viral video

Unironically, I think ASCII has tons of potential as a graphic style, especially given how much the core techniques have evolved beyond just "one character, one tile". I've actually made a number of small game prototypes that use purely text graphics (not textmode, tho)

re: music. Some people don't like "Precious Thing" but it's important. As dance evolved, underground producers started making music specifically for dance. PT is in a style of G Funk specifically made for popping. Once again, Team Reptile showing they are dialed in on the culture

I fuck w/ it. I know what this is. It's giving French house, disco house. It's giving Cassius. Martin Solveig. Spiller. I hate how kneejerk "le video game music" fans are when it comes to genre experimentation as if 2000's jazz fusion and hip hop OSTs weren't also experiments

A user named BabaJeanmel has begun translating the obscure PC-98 action platformer adaptation of Dante's Inferno made by Koei. First of all, look at that gorgeous UI border. But more importantly, listen to the music lmao. Not what I expected Dante's Inferno to sound like.

I think my favorite Y2k era UI design is from Marionette Handler 2, a game I will simply never shut up about. It and the entire mech programming game genre is ripe for "obscure thing" content but nobody talks about it. Amazing "fake Operating System" style presentation.

Here's a compilation of the finished ones so far. Of course, nobody is obligated to commit. The goal was just to encourage drawing and spotlight some obscure designs. They appear in the order of the thread. Good job everyone. If I missed you feel free to reply with your art.
