Today I'm listening to Fantastic Plastic Machine's debut self-titled. It's '97, so a fusion of lounge, bossa nova, electronic and hip-hop (aka. shibuya-kei). The most striking track, "First Class 77", has a phased synth loop that sounds like it was ripped straight out a PS1 game

Unironically, I think ASCII has tons of potential as a graphic style, especially given how much the core techniques have evolved beyond just "one character, one tile". I've actually made a number of small game prototypes that use purely text graphics (not textmode, tho)

some trivia: this guy is a international level bboy named Atsuki from Naruto Japan and Real Akiba Boyz. He hosts Akibaccano--underground dance battles where they dance to anime songs. If you're a Miku fan, you will recognize him as breakdancing Miku from that old viral video

Flying thru the lowpoly megastructures of Crime Cities which, by name, sounds like one of those crappy mobile GTA clones, but is actually an urban hovercraft combat game from 2000. That genre was popular in the tail end of the "6DoF" craze (G-Police, BHunter, etc.)

Revisiting an old freeware mech game from 2003 called Second Age. The systems are well designed and very intuitive, but it was sadly abandoned. There are a ton of clearly finished characters in this "trial" version but you tediously must use the "random" option to play them lol

I fuck w/ it. I know what this is. It's giving French house, disco house. It's giving Cassius. Martin Solveig. Spiller. I hate how kneejerk "le video game music" fans are when it comes to genre experimentation as if 2000's jazz fusion and hip hop OSTs weren't also experiments

I enjoy jazz, but I'm not huge on 10 min smooth jazz session bands and not read enough on theory to do much avant garde. My tempo is more Afro-Latin stuff that makes you feel like you're robbing a train. So today I'm listening to Candido's Beautiful. Track: "I'm On My Way"
