Space Manbow for the MSX2 (Konami/1989). Considered one of the absolute greatest and most technically impressive shoot-'em-ups for the MSX2 computer. Built from the ground up for the hardware, it pushes the system to its limits and also has a stellar SCC/chip soundtrack. Originally a Japan-exclusive release, it was later digitally ported for the Wii Virtual Console in 2009 and is available on mobile platforms and Project EGG, as well as a minigame (first level) inside Ganbare Goemon DS (2005).

INTELLIVANIA for the Mattel Intellivision (by Matthew Kiehl/2020). Phalanx for the SNES (Kemco/1991). Highly competent side-scrolling space shooter. It's better known for the US box art featuring a banjo-playing old man, which was an intentionally absurd marketing tactic used to catch shoppers' eyes in a crowded market full of covers featuring ships and explosions. The game is also available for the GBA and X68000.

Alone in the Dark (Infogrames/1992) for MS-DOS PC is widely considered a cult classic and the true father of 3D survival horror, establishing the formula of fixed camera angles and resource management. Penguin Adventure (Yume Tairiku Adventure) by Konami/1986. MSX sequel to Antarctic Adventure, it improves so much on it that it's hard to begin. It's a mind-blowing game for those who grew up with the MSX computer back then (Brazil, Spain, Japan, etc.). Pushing the MSX1 hardware to new highs, it's extremely varied, fun, creative, and filled with content. Many may known it because it's Hideo Kojima's debut in the industry (assistant designer, while the main designer was Ryouhei Shogaki, known for The Maze of Galious). And Kojima included an homage in Metal Gear Solid 4 when Sunny can be seen playing Penguin Adventure.

Alien vs. Predator (Capcom/1994) was a major arcade success, both commercially and critically. It's widely celebrated as one of the greatest beat-'em-ups of all time. Despite its massive success, licensing complexities kept it trapped in arcades for decades. Fun fact: Lt. Linn Kurosawa was referenced or made cameos in Street Fighter games.

Capcom's 194X series is a classic line of World War II shoot 'em ups, primarily starring the American P-38 Lightning aircraft. Designed with Western markets in mind, it was a commercial success. The core arcade titles can be seen below. "1944" was rotated 90ยฐ to fit (because it isn't "tate mode" like the others).
