I am the daughter of Dominican immigrants. I am a New Yorker. And like so many in our district, I am a renter who has had to wonder whether I can afford to stay in the city that I love. I’m running for Congress because New Yorkers deserve a fighter standing up for us in Washington — and on June 23, that’s exactly what we will deliver.

Juneteenth commemorates not the day that Black people won freedom in this country, but the day Black people finally received word of that freedom, more than two years after Emancipation. While we celebrate freedom on Juneteenth fully and unabashedly, we are also reminded that the powerful will try to rob us of our freedoms if left to their own devices. But the power of the people is absolute— as long as we continue to exercise it, and guard against the forces that seek to divide us. Thank you to National Action Network and Reverend Al Sharpton for allowing me to share my thoughts with the congregation on this sacred day.

Para nosotros, como neoyorquinos, es fundamental contar con un liderazgo que utilice todos los recursos a su alcance para protegernos del ICE y permitirnos llevar la vida digna que merecemos.
