Detective Helen Grus of the Ottawa Police uncovered an unusual cluster of infant deaths and began asking questions that drew the attention of powerful interests. For doing her job, she became the subject of Canada's longest and most costly police disciplinary hearing. Her case has resulted in police officers being required to seek permission before investigating public officials or crimes with "political ramifications." Ottawa Police Detective Helen Grus was found guilty of “discreditable conduct", not for breaking the law, but for investigating a cluster of unexplained infant deaths without political permission.
