The family has been asking for a headcount for some time in CFIA have been refusing. Sgt. Mike Rude (retired) has been spending some time in the mountains and has gathered evidence that appears to show the number of ostriches here is far lower than it should be. Mike and Katie attempted to deliver this evidence, with the sworn testimony from Mike, to the RCMP. Katie was ignored, told someone would call her and about an hour later we got word that someone would meet with Katie and Mike tomorrow morning at 0800. More to come.

OP BINWATCHING is underway. There has been serious, and I believe credible, concern raised here at Universal Ostrich Farms that the number of birds here is low and possibly dropping. Sgt. Mike Rude (retired) has been collecting evidence and has provided that to the RCMP along with a sworn affidavit. The RCMP have confirmed that they have begun and investigation and that it is ongoing. However, they have also stated to the family that they do not plan to do an independent headcount and will rely on CFIA for information. We know for certain that one ostrich has already died here while under the "care" of CFIA and under the "protection" of the RCMP. A simple headcount could clear this up and relieve a lot of stress on the family and the public following this story. I don't know if there are birds missing yet, but many people do and the evidence I've seen from Mike and with my own eyes makes me inclined to think something is off. If there are birds missing, we are going to do our best to prove it and if there isn't, that would be the best outcome. More to come.

The CFIA has released a weekend statement running damage control after a hen at the BC Ostrich Farm allegedly died due to their neglect. I took the time to respond to and explain each part of their statement. The fact that the CFIA refuses to properly test these animals, who appeared healthy for more than 250 days before they arrived, is a black mark on the entire agency. If these allegations are true, that would likely raise the reputational damage the CFIA has suffered to at least one criminal offence.

UPDATE from Universal Ostrich Farms: Mike and I took FOB SMITH to the RCMP command post. There is a lot of fencing and a lot of bins there today but far less vehicles and police than usual. There is still no official ostrich count and no indication that CFIA or RCMP will be doing one. Mike and I are continuing to gather evidence, we are looking for the truth. There is zero transparency here and a lot of things in place that make it appear there is something to hide. CFIA or the RCMP could easily put many of these questions to rest with a count of the birds and a sliver of transparency.

"How do you allow the criminal to lead the investigation?" Karen, Katie and Mike Rude give us the latest update from Universal Ostrich Farms. There is a growing concern that the number of birds here is far lower than it should be and the family has been desperately trying to get a head count. Mike has been collecting evidence which was given to our RCMP this morning. The RCMP confirmed that they have begun and investigation and that is ongoing. Now we're hearing that the people informing RCMP for their investigation are the very ones that should be being investigated! The lack of transparency here is appalling. CFIA should have a headcount at all times in sharing this information would go a long way to easing the family's concerns. If CFIA won't do the right thing, I implore the RCMP to investigate this properly and do their job as police.
