the market has evolved and Kimi K3 is bullish for the infrastructure layer "There’ll be an interesting, almost thermonuclear battle to provide the compute to support the demand that’s emerging for open weight models" -Benchmark's Peter Fenton Deepseek 1.5 yrs ago made everyone question how much compute AI would actually need. K3 points the other way -- cheaper, open models mean wider distribution, more usage, more inference

“It is in America’s interest to actually support open source" - Aravind Srinivas when I asked him yesterday about Washington’s fear of Chinese open AI models His view: Nvidia/Nemotron can help close the gap, but the US should support open weights because affordability is what lets businesses use AI.

Benchmark’s Peter Fenton says 90%+ of tokens could come from open weight models in the next 18-24 months, pressuring frontier model margins. Full convo at 12p PT/3p ET on the livestream, plus Aravind Srinivas on Perplexity’s new orchestrator model and Jeffrey Morgan on why enterprises are moving toward AI models they can download and control

The post-frontier era: cost, control and compute. Learned a ton in this livestream with Aravind Srinivas, Peter Fenton and Jeffrey Morgan. Big takeaway: the model race is becoming a systems race. Routing, open weight models, local compute, enterprise data, and whether the big labs’ pricing power holds once buyers have more options. Worth a full listen. Link below.

Is compute scarcity masking the real economics of AI? interesting point from Peter Fenton: open-weight models are still complex to run well. For now, the big labs have the bundle: model + compute + reliability + access... and thus pricing power. But if compute supply loosens and open model tooling gets easier, routine AI work can more easily move to cheaper/open models.

Claude in Excel is breaking down gated analysis. Built this with just a few prompts and Factset data: base/bull/bear cases on $GOOGL search revenue vs AI infra costs would normally have to wait for this kind of analysis in a Wall St note Earnings season is going to be 🔥

"One of the biggest misconceptions" Cerebras CFO Bob Komin pushes back on the small-models narrative. "We serve all models, and there is no limit to the size of the models that we can serve. Today, we're serving trillion parameter models. We're serving trillion parameter models that are internal for OpenAI today. We are currently running OpenAI 5.4 and 5.5 with them."

Get ready to hear a lot more about model routing --matching the job to the model instead of running everything through the most expensive one "For a lot of the boilerplate work, you can get five times, ten times better cost efficiency using models that are still good enough" -Cognition's Scott Wu

didn't get Cerebras allocation? Ram Parameswaran says dont sweat it: 1) Every stock gets back to its IPO price. 2) buy Google. "Every stock gets back to its IPO price. I used to also be very anxious back in the day when we didn't get big allocations. It doesn't really matter. There'll always be a chance to buy it again if you're patient" "Number two... if you don't have the capacity to get into these IPOs, well, just buy Google. They have the cheapest cost of tokens, they have the longest capacity structures, they keep getting better and better models every single time, the best talent density."

the AI roll-up is only getting started Long Lake CEO Alexander Taubman has bought 30+ real-economy, non-tech companies and just took the largest corporate travel platform private (Amex GBT, $6.3B) its a bet that AI can better transform legacy industries and that someone has to turn capex into real economic growth "You see the hundreds of billions of CapEx the labs are investing. Somebody's got to take that and turn it into GDP growth. That's what Long Lake was formed to do."

TOKENS OR HUMANS? The new corporate trade off as AI costs balloon "This is the first time ever that I can remember that technology costs the same as people" - Arvind Jain "Companies say, hey, if we could optimize one thing, is it the number of employees that we have, or is it the AI spend per employee?" -Matan Grinberg Annual AI budgets are being exhausted in weeks. Future headcount is being weighed against compute.
