the second oldest olive tree in the world is the Al Badawi tree in Al Walaja, a village on the outskirts of Bethlehem. it’s estimated to be about 5000 years old by scientists. the tree holds religious, spiritual, historical, and cultural significance and is a pilgrimage site for many visitors from abroad. for the residents of Al Walaja it has also become a symbol of resistance, after their village was destroyed and they lost about 70% of their land to the settlers. Salah Abu Ali, the owner of the land where the tree is located, has dedicated his life to protecting and nurturing the olive tree. just like his father did, he often sleeps under the tree to guard it. and so do his sons. the tree has beautiful nicknames such as “the fortress” or “the mother of olives”. it is known that the older the tree, the better the quality and taste of the olives & olive oil they produce. so you can only imagine the fruits this beauty produces. as i’ve mentioned a couple of times before, archaeobotany is an extremely important part of our palestinian identity. olive trees are among the oldest inhabitants of palestine. “this tree represents an integral part of our identity and our resistance against the israeli occupation.” - Salah Abu Ali

this institution will always be racist. and a lot of you western “allies” too. you lack self awareness so bad when it comes to centering western practices and “values”, completely neglecting cultural differences regarding things like funeral processions and refusing to interrogate your ethnocentrism. what happened yesterday with the bodies of the hostages killed by the occupation was a common funeral procession, the exact same one that used to be held by Palestinians for our martyrs before october 2023. now our people don’t have the luxury to hold these for the hundreds of thousands of our martyrs, now their bodies get dumped in mass graves. this luxury was reserved for the settlers, out of respect. where is this condemnation by the UN and everyone and their western mama when the occupation is desecrating the bodies of Palestinian martyrs with bulldozers, tanks, throwing the martyrs from the rooftops? when occupation troops attacked Palestinian pall-bearers carrying Shireen Abu Akleh's casket, after she was shot by the occupation? when israel releases TRUCKS full of drcomposed Palestinian bodies in plastic bags, with no information on their names, ages and where they were killed and kidnapped? YOU are the uncivilized. YOU are the barbaric. YOU are the inhumane.
