The Infantry Skills Competition took place recently in the Glen of Imaal, bringing together teams from across the Defence Forces to test their soldiering skills, teamwork and resilience in a demanding field environment. Following a highly competitive series of events, the 28th Infantry Battalion retained their title. An important chapter in the history of the Defence Forces came to a close with the final ceremonial parade at St. Bricin’s Military Hospital. Since becoming St. Bricin’s Military Hospital in 1922, and with military medical services having operated on the site since 1790, it has played a central role in the care, training and development of generations of Medical Corps personnel. From supporting Defence Forces members at home to preparing medical personnel for service overseas, its contribution to military medicine has left an enduring legacy. While we bid farewell to this historic institution, the values of service, professionalism, compassion and excellence that defined St. Bricin’s will continue through the personnel of the Medical Corps as they transition to a modern, fit for purpose Military Medical Facility. On the 26th of September 2023, the MV Matthew was interdicted by the Joint Task Force (JTF) on Drug Interdiction. The JTF consists of the Revenue Customs Service, An Garda Síochána and the Naval Service as the lead representatives for the Defence Forces. During this operation, all three services of Óglaigh na hÉireann were deployed. The Naval Service's L.E. William Butler Yeats interdicted the MV Matthew, while the Air Corps' C295 and PC12 provided surveillance and overwatch to enable an AW139 to deploy members of the Army Ranger Wing by fast rope onto the MV Matthew to secure and take control of the vessel. These unique skillsets provided by Óglaigh na hÉireann, supported Revenue Customs Service and An Garda Síochána in making the largest drugs seizure in the history of the state. The operation represents the culmination of the constant planning and preparation conducted by our people, across all the three services of Óglaigh na hÉireann.

Students from across the three formations recently completed Exercise BREAK IN, a 108 hour Military Operations in Urban Terrain (MOUT) exercise conducted during the Young Officers (YOs) Course. Included is also footage from the All Arms Standard NCO Course, completing their own MOUT exercise. Students were assessed in urban operations, close target reconnaissance and platoon command before assaulting, securing and defending a built up area (BUA) against a simulated enemy counter attack. Following MOUT, the Infantry YOs deployed on Exercise HARD STOP, a 96 hour defensive exercise where students were assessed in conventional defensive tactics, techniques and procedures before moving onto the final portion of the exercise phase, a 96 hour offensive exercise. #ÓglaighnahÉireann

On 09 September 25, the Defence Forces unveiled the new Óglaigh na hÉireann GAA jerseys in Croke Park. A symbol of our shared organisational values of community, teamwork, and pride. Defence Forces GAA President Major General Anthony McKenna was in attendance and said “I am delighted to be here today for the launch of the new Óglaigh na hÉireann Cumann Luthchleas Gael jerseys. In advance of their deployment to South Lebanon next month, the 125 Infantry Battalion have successfully conducted their Mission Readiness Exercise (MRE) in the Glen of Imaal. These two weeks are the culmination of 3 months of intensive preparation ahead of their deployment and they have practiced and honed a broad range of skills for their role including armoured force protection, patrolling and mobility, surveillance, communications, medical and operational expertise. The troops of the 125 Inf Bn are being put through their paces in a variety of realistic exercises. The Mission Readiness Exercise puts commanders and soldiers through a demanding series of scenarios based on the current situation in Lebanon and potential threats that may be encountered in the volatile mission area. In the last number of days the troops have faced a series of scenarios involving simulated explosive strikes, air mobile helicopter drills, anti ambush tactics, detailed operational planning and medical evacuation exercises.
