FACT CHECK 🚨 The claim that the CEC should be selected with the participation of the government and Leader of the Opposition is NOT a new idea. In March 2023, the Supreme Court directed that the selection committee include the PM, LoP and CJI. But the Modi government’s 2023 law replaced the CJI with a Cabinet Minister nominated by the PM. In February 2025, Rahul Gandhi was part of the committee that selected Gyanesh Kumar but he submitted a dissent note. The real debate is not whether the Opposition gets a seat, but whether the selection process ensures genuine independence from the executive. A foreign tourist visiting India has alleged a disturbing incident involving an Uber driver. According to her account, after the ride had already started, the driver demanded additional money for a toll that she says was already included in the Uber fare. When she suggested calling Uber to confirm, the driver allegedly told her to GET OUT OF THE CAR in the middle of a busy three-way intersection. She refused to get out in the middle of the intersection, following which the driver allegedly pulled over to the side and was apparently shouting at her. She eventually had to leave the vehicle and wait around 10 minutes for another Uber in an area where she says she did not feel comfortable. The next Uber driver reportedly completed the same route without asking her for any additional toll payment. She subsequently contacted Uber and says the company confirmed that the toll was already included in her fare.
