𝐄𝐗𝐏𝐎𝐒𝐄𝐃: 𝐏𝐎𝐋𝐈𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐀𝐋 𝐏𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐓𝐘 𝐒𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐓𝐄𝐆𝐘 (𝐏𝐏𝐒) 𝐁𝐄𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐔𝐒𝐄𝐃 𝐓𝐎 𝐊𝐄𝐄𝐏 𝐔𝐊𝐀𝐌𝐁𝐀𝐍𝐈 𝐏𝐎𝐎𝐑 The slow pace of development in the Ukambani region compared to areas such as Nyanza, Mt. Kenya, and North Eastern is not accidental. It is part of a deliberate strategy by Hon. Kalonzo Musyoka to maintain psychological control over the Kamba people. The 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐲 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐲 (𝐏𝐏𝐒) is a political formula for acquiring and maintaining power by depriving followers of development. The aim is to make them view a particular leader as their “saviour” and eternal hope. This strategy is based on the political logic that an economically empowered population is harder to control and mislead. In Ukambani, the Political Poverty Strategy is disguised under the slogan “𝐕𝐨𝐦𝐰𝐞 𝐧𝐚 𝐕𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐚” which translates to “𝙍𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙨𝙩 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙗𝙚 𝙝𝙖𝙧𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙙”, suggesting that poverty should be normalized and endured. It is telling that while Hon. Raila Odinga has historically joined the Government of the day after an electoral loss to ensure his people benefit from development, Hon. Kalonzo Musyoka has consistently rejected any efforts that would bring tangible development to his own people. Why? Because empowering the Ukambani community weakens his grip. It is no surprise that he often works against any leader striving to liberate the region from poverty. However, the days of allowing a community to suffer for the sake of one individual’s political survival are over. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐰. I emphasize that no one should insult leaders, and that Hon. Kalonzo Musyoka must be treated with respect and decorum. But he must also be exposed. His actions are directly linked to the death of mothers during childbirth, the deepening poverty of our elders, and the hopelessness facing our youth. People are suffering because of the 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐲 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐲 (𝐏𝐏𝐒) promoted by Hon. Kalonzo Musyoka. This is why he opposes President William Ruto’s visits to Ukambani to launch development projects such as roads, dams, water supply, electricity, education, hospitals, farming support, job creation, and more. He wants Ukambani to remain poor and dependent to sustain his strategy. To prove this point, some legislators who recently visited Tseikuru were shocked. Of all Vice Presidents who have served Kenya, only the home area of Hon. Kalonzo Musyoka lacks tarmac roads, electricity, clean water, and basic infrastructure. It remains engulfed in abject poverty. That is the Political Poverty Strategy in action. There is a saying: “𝙆𝙖𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙖 𝙖𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙚 𝙣𝙖 𝙠𝙞𝙡𝙖 𝙬𝙖𝙞𝙩𝙚” — 𝙆𝙖𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙖 𝙡𝙚𝙛𝙩 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙤𝙣𝙡𝙮 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙝𝙚 𝙝𝙖𝙙 𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙣. We want development now, not at the whim of a political strategy designed to keep us poor. Therefore, where the mantra of Hon. Kalonzo Musyoka is: “𝐕𝐨𝐦𝐰𝐞 𝐧𝐚 𝐕𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐚” (Resist and be hardened), ours is: “𝐕𝐎𝐋𝐎𝐋𝐎𝐄 𝐍𝐀 𝐌𝐔𝐓𝐔𝐀” (Liberate and transform). Mbele iko Sawa. 𝐃𝐫. 𝐀𝐥𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐍. 𝐌𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐚, 𝐄𝐆𝐇.
