Texas public education has gone off the rails after years under the leadership of TEA Commissioner Mike Morath. The sight of students being allowed to leave campuses en masse, escorted by ISD police, highlights a systemic failure within the public school system. Texas’ largest school districts have effectively been taken over by the political left and have operated outside the bounds of state law without facing consequences. While Governor Abbott has called on Morath to investigate Austin ISD after hundreds of students were seen leaving school and walking miles to protest during instructional hours, there is little reason to believe meaningful change will occur without new leadership at the very top of the Texas education system. Even a brief review of social media shows similar walkouts across Fort Worth Independent School District , Waco ISD , Austin ISD , schools in the San Antonio area, Conroe ISD, and others—some reportedly involving staff participation.
