As Michael Bird, an evangelical New Testament scholar, has pointed out: many preach the inerrancy of the Bible but practice the inerrancy of their interpretations. For me, inerrancy means that the Bible is inerrant in what it teaches—in its message. Even Norman Geisler, who was about as conservative on inerrancy as one can get and helped shape the Chicago Statement, admitted in his Big Book of Bible Difficulties that there are errors in our present text. The Chicago Statement itself acknowledges that inerrancy applies only to the autographs, not to the copies we have today. So let’s be honest: our current Bibles do contain errors. Could God have preserved a perfectly inerrant text? Of course. But He didn’t. The fact historians can't ignore. Paul knew that writing those names down was a massive risk if the story wasn't true.
