Pleased to welcome President Mikheil Kavelashvili Mikheil Kavelashvili to World Health Organization (WHO). We discussed #Georgia's health reforms, including strengthening primary health care and advancing universal health coverage, as well as addressing risk factors for noncommunicable diseases, including tobacco and physical activity. I reaffirmed World Health Organization (WHO)'s commitment to supporting Georgia's journey towards #HealthForAll, including through promoting healthy lifestyles, strengthening health services, and improving access to health care for vulnerable populations in rural and remote areas. I also thanked President Kavelashvili for his commitment to global health, including advancing digital inclusion and the responsible use of AI in health. I welcome his participation in the #AIforGood Summit and leadership on AI governance.

A great start to the day this morning with students from Imperial School of Public Health, discussing World Health Organization (WHO)'s work in health emergencies, how we're adapting to the aid funding crisis, and why the Pandemic Agreement is essential to protecting their future. Imperial College London School of Public Health is a WHO Collaboration Centre for health systems strengthening, capacity building, and public health workforce development. Through education, training and technical support, the Centre helps us to strengthen the capacity of health systems globally to respond to emerging public health needs. Thank you for the great discussion and for coming!

I've never in my life seen the level of destruction as I did on the road from Aleppo to Damascus. Skeletons of houses. Almost no people in sight. Over a decade of war has taken an unimaginable toll. Syrians need our support now and in years to come to rebuild their lives.

Since this morning’s reports of a raid of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern #Gaza, we have lost touch with the personnel there. This development is deeply disturbing given the number of patients being served and people sheltering there. Prior to this, World Health Organization (WHO) and partners managed to reach Kamal Adwan Hospital late last night, amid hostilities in the vicinity, and transferred 23 patients and 26 caregivers to Al-Shifa Hospital. The team also delivered 180 units of blood, trauma and surgical supplies and medicines for over 5000 patients. Kamal Adwan Hospital has been overflowing with close to 200 patients - a constant stream of horrific trauma cases. It is also full of hundreds of people seeking shelter. Accessing hospitals across #Gaza is getting unbelievably harder and exposes our staff to unnecessary danger. The mission returned at 3.30 am. We call for an immediate ceasefire; and protection of hospitals, patients, health professionals and humanitarians. Everyone in Gaza needs peace.

May the souls of our departed UNRWA colleagues rest in peace, and may we draw strength from their example as we continue our vital work in the pursuit of a better world. Below is my full speech, as we gathered at World Health Organization (WHO) to honour our colleagues, who lost their lives, with a minute of silence: Dear colleagues, Today, we gather with heavy hearts to remember and honor our dear UN colleagues who tragically lost their lives in #Gaza. Their unwavering commitment, sacrifice, and bravery will forever be etched in our memories. These dedicated individuals embodied the spirit of the United Nations, standing on the frontlines of conflict zones to provide much-needed humanitarian assistance and support. They put their lives on the line to bring hope and relief to those affected by violence and despair. Their memory and the impact they made will forever remain. Their unwavering dedication to peace, justice, and the well-being of others serves as a guiding light and a reminder of the importance of our shared mission. In the face of immense challenges and danger, they remained steadfast in their commitment to make a difference in the lives of those they served. Their courage and selflessness touched the lives of countless individuals and communities. Today, we honor their memory and recommit ourselves to the pursuit of peace, justice, and the well-being of all people. We extend our deepest condolences and support to the families and loved ones left behind. Their loss is immeasurable, and we stand in solidarity with them during this difficult time. As we reflect on the lives of our fallen colleagues, let us also recognize the importance of unity and collaboration. Together, we can continue their important work and strive for a world where conflicts are resolved peacefully, where the rights of all individuals are respected, and where humanitarian aid reaches those in need without impediment. May the souls of our departed UN colleagues rest in peace, and may we draw strength from their example as we continue our vital work in the pursuit of a better world. May the path to lasting peace be paved for Palestinians and Israelis. May the wounds of the past be healed, and may Palestinians and Israelis find true peace, reconciliation, and coexistence, fostering a future of mutual respect, prosperity, and harmony. I now ask you to join me in a minute’s silence in honor of their memory and sacrifice, and for peace.

It's easy to get caught up in nonstop work. Precious moments like a simple walk with my daughter, who is growing too fast, remind me of what matters most. She helps me improve my work-life balance, one step at a time. Give it a try!

Today World Health Organization (WHO) delivered trauma and emergency care supplies to European Gaza Hospital and Nasser Medical Complex in southern #Gaza to cover the needs of 4500 patients. So much more is needed. The very intense fighting is making it increasingly difficult to run any health operations. This was the first delivery mission since 29 November. Nowhere is safe. We are extremely concerned about thousands of patients, and health and care workers. The only way to protect them is a ceasefire. NOW.

With World Health Organization (WHO)'s support, Ministry of Health- Uganda has started a vaccine trial against #Ebola Sudan virus today. The trial will enroll contacts of people with the disease, and contacts of the contacts. This vaccination trial was initiated with record speed, only three days since the outbreak was declared, while ensuring full compliance with international and national regulatory and ethical requirements. It is also the first trial to assess the clinical efficacy of a vaccine against Ebola Sudan virus disease. This trial demonstrates the importance of investing in R&D for vaccines and treatments and outbreak response preparedness, as well as partnerships. We thank Makerere University University and UVRI for their leadership, as well as Africa CDC, CEPI, EU HERA and IDRC | CRDI for their collaboration on this lifesaving effort. WHO will continue supporting the government in a comprehensive response to bring the outbreak under control.
