𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞. Today's exchange moved into engineering. Stakeholders dissected endowment architecture; capital formation strategies, investment thesis development, governance frameworks designed to outlast leadership cycles, and drawdown policies that balance sustainability with mission delivery.🥳 The conversations were operational. Practitioners interrogating what it actually takes to build financial vehicles that anchor institutions beyond donor dependence. 𝐓𝐰𝐨 𝐝𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐊𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐥𝐚. 𝐓𝐰𝐨 𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞. 𝐒𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐚 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐮𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠. 𝐒𝐨 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨 𝐰𝐞 𝐝𝐨 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐚𝐬? With those words, Brian Tamuka Kagoro tore open the veil. A call to abandon fantasies of rescue and confront the architecture of reliance that philanthropy has too often upheld. This dialogue challenged the room not to mourn the withdrawal of aid, but to script new compacts rooted in sovereignty, memory, and self-authorship. 🎥𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐀𝐢𝐝 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐫𝐮𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 & 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐭𝐲 𝐇𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐳𝐨𝐧: Jacqueline Asiimwe Janet Mawiyoo Irũngũ Houghton CivSource Africa Amnesty Kenya

What if the informal sector 𝐢𝐬𝐧’𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐥, just misrecognized by frameworks too narrow to see African ingenuity for what it is? What we often label as marginal, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐝𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐫, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫, is in fact sustaining families, funding education, and powering community economies without institutional scaffolding. The question, he challenged, is not how to scale these models into formal corporate replicas, but how to 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐝𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐚𝐥𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲 𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐨𝐝𝐲. This is where African philanthropy must locate itself; not outside these systems offering support, but inside them, 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐟𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐥𝐚𝐰𝐬, 𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐟𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲. That, he argued, is when we begin to truly realize 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐩𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐲, Dr. Tendai Murisa of SIVIO Institute during Day Two of the 9th East Africa Philanthropy Conference in Kigali. 🎥𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥 𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞:

“Philanthropy alone won’t get us there, not at the depth or scale. If we are to architect real transformation, our role must be catalytic: 𝐮𝐧𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭, 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐟𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐬𝐞𝐭𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥—public and private—that matches the moment's complexity. The golden age of grantmaking may be behind us; what lies ahead is an era of convergence finance, co-creation, and capital that doesn’t just fund change, but fuels it.”— Mendi, KCBFoundation. 🎥 Watch the full reflection here:

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬. When the right people gather with the right questions, something shifts. You can feel it, the focus, the exchange, the quality of attention. This is what purposeful convening looks like. Thank you to our partners, Ashoka East Africa, AF Mpanga Advocates, and Philanthropy Forum Uganda.
