As my full term as President draws to a close, and in keeping with a six-century-old tradition at Queens', Professor James Campbell masterfully found an artist and convinced me to sit for a portrait. Good morning. Today is the second and final day of in-person voting at the Senate House. If you work in Cambridge or can travel there, it is your chance to make history by helping to choose our next Chancellor in the most democratic process to date. It is quick and easy to do, with a bit of dress-up involved (the University will provide a gown). Another "Oxford versus Cambridge" exchange with Oliver@Oxford! On a more serious note, our two universities, along with virtually all of UK higher education, share a common challenge: a growing funding gap. With government funding for higher education under increasing strain, Cambridge must redouble its efforts to attract funding and donations. I've seen firsthand how innovation and philanthropy help to support vital research, expand opportunities, and better secure our future – first as co-chair (with Sir Harvey McGrath) of Cambridge's £2 billion Capital Campaign, and now as President of Queens'. If elected Chancellor, I'll intensify these efforts by helping to tap into global philanthropic opportunities and to attract the investment Cambridge needs.
