How is it that an economist who was the director of Institute for Fiscal Studies — probably the premier institution for fiscal policy research — for 14 years, so clueless on inflation? How did someone whose career involved 3 years at the Treasury not know this? When people like this are informing policy, we ought to be worried. The total lack of understanding around inflation, government bonds, and wider macroeconomics is shocking. No wonder there are people who think a shadowy cabal of “bond vigilantes” are purposefully bringing down the government. They don’t understand that when someone lends you lots of money they want to be sure that you’re going to pay it back!
